That really is very clever by M$. Make the consumers feel special by including them in the global first display. MTV is such a huge channel, god knows how many people watch it around the world; the exposure will be phenomenal.

It could also be bad. If they haven't had a launch to the industry first, they may suffer if some aspects of the offering haven't been ironed out.
Can you imagine if Nintendo did this with the DS last year? The way it was styled for the E3 presentations, I don't think many people watching MTV would have been impressed.
I also seem to remember the XBox unveiling with Dwayne Johnson, was that not a "public" offering? It seemed a bit Hollywood for an industry event.

You're right. If M$ do a bodge-job it could really scupper their hopes of next-gen domination. Depends on how confident they are in their preperations. But they must be pretty confident to put it on lil' ol' MTV. It's high risk. But the tactic of getting it into the mainstream first, is to ingrain Xbox 360 into the consumer's mind as the Next-Gen machine.
It all means nothing, though, if Sony also get it right yet again. The PS brand still equals videogames.
it seems that microsoft is adamant to monopolize the video games market and they are just gonna keep on throwing endless money at it. But why? isnt monopolizing one market enough for them? i like the xbox live idea but really there is nothing that has made me think "yeah microsoft has a good vision for the video games market".

Why doesn't creating a single format sound like a good idea, at least Microsoft's one. If Sony had the market (and this is from how they have behaved with other products such as Betamax) they wouldn't let anyone else produce the console, its price would probably still be subsided but it would go down a lot slower.
Nintendo would probably allow other manufacturers to produce consoles in a similar line to Microsoft, however, it is Microsoft's that is the most radical.
Look at all of Microsofts other products. What are they (apart from anything to do with gaming)? Tools. They provide tools.
What would that ideology have on the console market then?
Imagine if you will this time in 5 years as we wait for the next gen.
Microsoft have become the dominant console. The loss of the market for Sony is disaterous for them (Sony get 40% of their income from the Playstation). With all other departments still struglling to break even, they have to downside drastically to stay afloat (this is what analyst have predicted to happen if Sony lost the market, not what I am making up). The Playstation brand is the key to this but with Xbox now being associated with gaming and no funds to drive the Playstation name, they are eventually bought out by Panasonic who for the moment have no interest in gaming.
Nintendo had to pull out as well after the Revolution failed to grasp the mass market worse than even the Dreamcast due to little or no 3rd party support. They still continue to dominate the handheld market after Sony's troubles.
So, Microsoft dominate the market... what happens next surprises everyone. Now that there is only one format, gaming can truely go mass market (Video games are like the VHS vs Betamax and CD vs CD-I and the upcoming HD-DVD and Blu-Ray battles but never ending).
Microsoft announce that they are to license out the technology to anyone who wants it, under whatever name they want to use. All Microsoft want is royalites for the use of the tech and the use of XNA to produce all games. They would still make a massive profit because they don't have to worry about hardware costs.
Video Games become truely mass market. No other console company comes close (with the exception of Nintendo to an extent).
thats a fair point, I understand where you are coming from. I think to underestimate sony though would be a bad call, yeah sure microsoft will be more successful next time round because they have established themselves but sony will still wow the crouds. With xbox 2 coming out a lot sooner than revolution or ps3 it also gives Nintendo and Sony the chance to maybe bulk up their machine with better visuals etc. I am keen to see what Nintendo and Sony offer, and i am especially interested in the revoluation. It is possible what you say about revolution bombing, we will have to wait and see. I am sure though that Nintendo will always be in the handheld business, as i am sure microsoft will try to invade to. The next generation console battle will be one to watch, i am hoping that the Japanese companies will stay around, because they are the best.
Ben, sweetie, Sony still dominates. PS2 has a larger installed user base, and "owning" well over 50 percent of the unit sales of the "current gen" software.
It may well become the dominant force in the battle for next gen, but at present, its an also-ran.
Anyways I shall definately be tuning in to see what microsoft have made of the 360
(I'm sure our old neocarrillo will have something to say on this topic)
Mac you called me out on this one. Well your old buddy neocarrillo has some light on this topic. I was flabbergasted by the announcement about xbox 360 being shown on mtv. What the hell is microsoft trying to do, are they that desperate to win. If anything this will kill the buzz for xbox 360, why? Since everyone will see the xbox 360 first it will get old first, especially after people see the playstation 3 and nintendo revolution. The fact is that a smart consumer would realise they would get a longer product lifespan from sony or nintendo, look at the xbox it didn't even make 4 years. The ps2 has lasted 6 years and will continue because of backwards compatibility, the same thing for the gamecube since revolution is also backwards compatible. The new xbox will sell but only because they will be the next gen system out first. Once revolution and ps3 are out, the momentum of the xbox 360 will collapse. I have heard rumors that microsoft wants halo 3 to come out on the same day as ps3, so they can kill ps3 sales. Microsoft should realise they can't stop the jaugernaut that is ps3. If micorsoft want's to play that hand then sony will play the hand of the next gen gta. Now that would be a sight to see to amazing games on separate consoles, which would win? I say gta since gta san andreas sold more than halo 2. The mere sound of the name ps3 makes microsoft tremble, for they know they will only have a window of one year to sell a substantial amount of xbox 360's before ps3 and revolution hit. I say xbox 360 may go the way of dreamcast, a next gen system that was out first but died soon after that.

You right about that buddy. Ps2 it still number one and xbox is a faaaaaar second place. The fact is xbox 360 will sell alot of units at first but if there are no good games other than halo 3 xbox 360 will fail. You also said "PS2 has a larger installed user base", and it will be that same user base that will lead sony and the ps3 to the top again.

er he was being hypothetical, you know setting the scene at the end of the next generation waiting for the consoles after that. Sony may be on top now, but who knows what Timmy may want come christmas?
