After 10 days on sale, the Nintendo DS Lite has managed to rack up sales of 200,000 consoles in the UK. The sales figures, announced by Nintendo today, follow the one million units of the original DS that had already been sold in Great Britain by January 2006. Total sales for both versions of the portable in the European market now stand at five million.
what i would really like to know, is how well the metroid prime games went down in japan. did they even get a japanese release?
Yes, they got a Japanese release.
nintendo outsourced it didnt they, and it also entered the genre of fps, one typically favoured by westerners.
They kinda outsourced it. They bought a stake in Retro Studios and funded it so it could buy so jazzy kit. Retro was working on a few projects for a bit, however didn't make much progress, and then Nintendo stepped in, bought the rest of the company and culled the titles down to Metroid Prime. 100% of the company is now owned by Nintendo.
The problem with Retro is that they are used by Nintendo only to make Metroid Prime games. A lot of the staff left in-between 1 and 2, apparently because because there were no opportunities to grow in the company.
IMO, Nintendo could well lose any genius that Retro had if they continue to make the company churn out Prime games.
theyre brilliant games, that more than adequately stand up to their heritage. hope japanese people saw it that way
Agreed, however the second one was technically good but playably a bit crap. It was a bit of a loveless trawl I found (there's a discussion on this elsewhere on SPOnG). I don't have Japanese sales figures but would speculate they would be less than the Western regions.
yeah id agree, 4 metroid prime games in as many years is going to take its toll on the employees. and as u said, it already has to some extent.
its almost as if nintendo are making up for the lack of console metroid games between its snes outing and the prime games! :P
but surely theyll lay off the metroid franchise after metroid prime 3, think they may have left off already actually but they need a strong franchise for the launch of the wii.
then retro will have some creative space hopefully, unless nintendo make them turn kirby into a fps/rts or something
