You could always become a chav...

As an "ig'nint" American on the chav phenomenon, I need a little clarification regarding them, as some of the online resources sort of...don't make much sense.

so to me they appear to be what "Da Ali G" show was going for - hip hop, B Boy-ish, brand-name emblazoned, ignorant folk.

And then I go over to ChavScum and they have Brittney Spears. To me, that's just PWT (as it's termed here in the states, for Poor White Trash). But as I scroll onward, my intial theory of the "true life" Ali G seems to be supported.

Any help with the clarification? for me it's hard to have the Beckhams, JLo, Brittney Spears, and Blazin Squad all lumped together, so I figure that the site is allowing anyone to nominate Chavs.

The Chav now defies clarification. It has become a catch all for everything the educated middle classes despise.

So it can be as much an unmarried mother, with several babies of different colours queuing in McDonalds as much as it can be the 'casual' kids hanging around the precinct (Britains Mall equivalent) in their tracksuits and baseball caps.

Equally it can be anyone new money, especially if they are stupid and flash - hence the Beckhams.

The original meaning was working class, uneducated and aspirational - the Chav was famous for wearing knock-off designer clothes, especially Burberry.

well we call them scallies where im from, and it goes like this -

drug abusing, under educated sportswear and cheap jewelry adorned oik involved in petty crime, intimidation and obnoxiousness almost everyday. they can be anything from age 10 to 20-odd. their main crime of choice is mugging (little effort, instantaneous rewards), usually violent, and usually involving big groups of them vs someone without a chance or someone unlikely to fight back. theyre quite capable of something more serious like a stabbing should they (god forbid) get their greasy mitts on a weapon. something more serious is even more likely if they happen to be off their tits when they meet with another - probably upstanding - member of society on a street.

scallies are usually working class, but can be middle class too, middle class youths becoming assimilated at school etc.

i have been attacked and threatened by this type of retard more times than i care to remember. the problem is rife where i live, and i am an involuntary observer to their miserable existance every day.

You don't think your attitude might be contributing to the problem?

Don't forget for a second that PS2 sold itself on this kind of graphic principal before (though not HD, just PS1 to PS2 but still plenty of crap games were still on it) and all the sucker gamers fell for it (except smarter folk like myself).

Well all the sucker gamers had the option to purchase a shed load more great games then other system owners. They may have been sold on a false premise, but 3rd parties made sure that there were games were (eventually) delivered.

I am finding it odd justifying my purchase of the 360 vs waiting for ps3 with many of the same reasons that ps2 owners used with the original xbox. Ah well, at least I've saved up (just enough) to be able to waggle a stick around come christmas day.

Well your original post seemed rather negative and I'm not quite sure how what you said was knowledge (I thought it was opinion myself). Anyway however you pidgeon box them, for all they may be unpleasant people, they are still people that you share your enviroment with (albiet involuntary). Perhaps a bit of give and take by all of us could kerb their (and our) more unsavoury habits and make the world a better place for all of us. Perhaps all these misguided youths need is a feeling of worth and an alternative to the activities you describe

Nah sod that, lets just call in the bombers, that'll sort the situation out.

Good animators put love in every polygon they put into a model and so need less for the effect they wanted to deliver.

you are indeed correct... a truly talented person can do amazing things with whatever tools are given to them... but that doesnt change the fact tha a talented animator would still be happier with more polys to lovingly place.

i still think it stands that more powerfull systems... atleast as far as art is concerned... shouldn't cost more to develop games for. Not to mention that 3d software is continually becomming more and more user friendly as time goes by.

The reason it costs more is because it's not just about the number of polygons. Actual technology behind games increases - even if it's just improvements like more texture layers - but includes physics, bigger games, more characters - generally more detail in multiple areas.

Therefore more staff are needed to work on these areas (even if it's just larger textures, for example - it takes more work to draw a bigger image, but we also get things like entire physics components, brand new sound and brand new graphics engines).

Yes, artists are probably more satisfied (happier) wth the end result, but it does take more work. Of course, making a model might be easier if you have a lot of polygons - in fact, adding extra detail does take more work beyond a certain level - but that is only one aspect of improvement in graphics. Very little is to do with polygon numbers these days when you take into consideration the entire graphics engine.

Basically, I think, however good an artist is, they cannot make an entire game. So it's like, if a game has twice the quantity of art, you would expect twice the number of artists.
