How often does the following happen? :-
You’re drilling someone, the screen goes blank, and you wake up dead.
You put endless rounds into them, they live but a light graze is fatal for you.
Your thinking “too survive one sniper head shot is lucky but four or more?”

I know my opinion and that of friends is some of the time coloured by being bad losers, however I got a message on XBL from gamer tag “SlothfulGerm” who I don’t know, so I checked their Bio. I hadn’t heard of [SNIP] before I read it in his/her Bio but if you’re going to brag about using it to win in your XBL Bio then you either know XBL complaints are pretty toothless or you are pretty low on IQ, either way you’re a bastard.

Sounds nasty and low-down. What's your Gamertag then so we can come and support you?
We all hate low-down, nasty, cheating, underhand methods to win everything from games to fair maidens to free advertising off the back of other people's work.

So, go on, who are you, erm, dude?

Cheers

Er thanks. Even so I'll stay anon. for now (I'd hate to slow you down).
In the meantime, cheating in a solo game might miss the point of the game, however in multi player you piss people off, which I can do by being condescending and patronizing (so my slightly less bright friends tell me).

PS Dude (what are the odds of that on this site)

:-) Anon is your right. I'm also very slow most of the time anyway, it's my age. Thanks for coming back and telling us more.

Very low, largely not worth the stake.

All the best

OK, if there is some kind of actual cheating going on (not just some made-up crap by a sore loser) I'd like to know about it...what are the actual mechanisms involved, so I'd recognize it if I seen it.

PS I can do condescending and patronizing...I may even be able to patronise if neccessay...

As the the info to backup my claims of cheating has been cut you'll have take my word for it, but if you want to go looking for them try playing ranked team slayer between 1 and 3am.

That said Bungie may be having a crack down as the past 2 weekends I can't say I've seen an obvious case also a friend how told someone she'd report them for cheating was counter reported so Bungie kicked her off, phone calls to Bungie got her put back on once they checked she hadn't anything.

yeah, but whats the...mechanism...for want of a better word...what are they doing?

I don't need a tutorial or a HOWTO, just a vague idea of what kind of cheating...

i.e. glitching like in Rainbow, a cable modem reset thing, or some other kind of deal...I just want to know what to look out for...not that I play Halo all that much anymore, with Vegas 2 coming out even less so, but I'd still like to know.

Why don't you ask Tim as he cut the name of the device from my first posting? I guess if he doesn’t want you to know I shouldn’t tell you.
Even so other clues are in that post, but if you can’t spot them I’ll summarize:-

1. Able to disconnect another player at will
2. Able to up armour and damage specs
3. The gamer tag of someone who brags about using the device in their Bio

(NEW INFO NOT 1st POST) The device is made by a main stream peripherals maker though cheating is not an advertised feature it does open the door to misuse apparently.
If you still need more info try Tim or Google. And why are you so interested in getting its name anyway?

Dear p,

Ouch... yes. The fact that you now appear not to be a clever piece of viral forum advertising bottage - if you are, I want your code - means that the brand name in question is fine for a discussion point from your good self.

Please feel free.

its a device then...like a Game Genie or somesuch, prolly made by Datel or something...I don't require any more information about it, I merely wanted to know, if people were cheating how were they doing it, so I could possibly recognize it if it happened to me, or around me. (shunning anyone I know who uses such for instance)

I was not looking for the specific name of a device, indeed I was not aware that such a device was the "mechanism" in question, AFAIK, it could have been a technique, or glitch in the game, or some ISP's cable modems or any of a myriad of different possibilities...up to and INCLUDING full-blown console modification. If this was a case of people claiming that its console modders doing the cheating, I'd be more skeptical and would demand more proof, as I've heard too many ridiculous claims made of this type. The fact that its a commercially sold "external mod", makes it both more likely, and more troubling.

Thanks Evil Ed. Glad I’m viral (I think)
However your suggestion of viral advertising got me wondering about the XBL message from SlothfulGerm. A lot (but not all) of the people in my clan also got this message but as far as I know SlothfulGerm wasn’t listed on anyone’s previous players list, plus that name hints at viralness. Petty conspiracy theory anyone?
For PreciousRoi’s info, it’s called a GameShark (Thanks Tim) made by MadCatz. As a note to anyone wanting to try cheating, I see from the disappointed user reviews on Amazon that MS does take action once it’s identified a fake game save or cheat code, so go ahead, lose your gamertag, it’ll keep me amused.

I looked up SlothfulGerm and s/he appears to be a real life gamer-type person.

So, better conspiracy theories in future please!

On a semi-unrelated topic...since this is a seaparate issue from the Game Genie thing...

I think dev should employ the worst glitchers as playtesters so they quit releasing shoddy games with glitches in the maps.

Got my grubby little paws on Vegas 2 yesterday...1/3 or so of the way through so far...

You will of course be sending me a full, 3,000 word review with hand-drawn illustration?

Hmmm, I had planned on a more "New" piece, but if you insist on a "full" review...

I have about 1,200 very rough right now, without touching on multiplayer or coop...need to play a bit more multi (some modes I haven't touched yet) and at least a level or two of coop before I'd feel qualified to write a "full" review.

Its also going to be aimed squarely at people who won't require a primer on either Rainbow 6 or Squad-based Tactical FPSes...no illustrations though...I draw like Kurt Vonnegut.
