Ok, first off, NO FANBOYS!!!

I just want someone to give an opinion. I love the price of PS3. 40gb, wifi, blu ray, £299.
But the xbox comes in at £249 for the pro with 2 games. But £50 for wifi, £100 for hd-dvd.

PS3 seem proud they have 65 games.
Xbox 360 has almost 300.

PS3 seems to have problems with games. AC, PES2008 etc, that need patching.
Xbox 360 seems to fail all the time!

So it begs the question, which one should i get?! The missus is getting it me for xmas!

Really, you need to consider which of the consoles has the games you want to play TODAY - or on Christmas day at least. If you're dying to Crackdown, then get a 360, if you really want to explore Uncharted territory, get a PS3. If you really want BluRay, get a PS3.

There is no question that the 360 has the better selection of games today, but in 12/18 months time, there will be little in it. Sure the 360 has had some reliability problems, but Microsoft seems to have stepped up to the plate with an extended warranty that should give you piece of mind.

And then there's one least thing, which one do you like the look of most? If it's gonna live in your lounge for the next few years, it's important. I don't LOVE the look of either of them, but I prefer the PS3 marginally, because it's piano black gloss finish goes nicely with my Hitachi projector. I had high hopes for the 360 Elite, but it turned out to be quite nasty and plasticy... so that blew it for me.

The PS3 was a definate choice for me. not because of reliability issues or anything but general presentation. i have both now but i feel the ps3 to be a better built console. it feels more solid (Which could be due to the size and weight). that and all my favourite franchises are on it. im not into FPS games or RPGs so the 360's extensive library doesent apeal to me. if you arent big into the online multiplayer then you dont want to be paying anualy for what is practicaly the same on ps3. the other thing is that if price is a major factor to you how many games will you be buying?

On a more game-related note all my favourite franchises are on the PS3. MGS, Tekken, Devil may Cry, GTA... sure a lot have gone multiformat but they are still available on ps3 along with the others. it depends on your prefered franchise. also i have never had problems with games crashing but that might be just luck.

For me the ps3 has more features: Blu-Ray, Games can use the HDD, I prefer the classic PS controlers, easy storage of video, music and photos. the internet works realy well on it and online is free.

in other words my vote goes for PS3

Unless you have no interest in, or a strong objection to paying for, online play, 360 would appear to be the safest choice. Another obvious caveat would be an overwhelming interest in Blu-Ray, PS exclusives, or other unique PS3 features.

Sure, PS3 should eventually have a lineup of quality exclusive games comparable to the 360. But its not even a case of "a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush", its a case of "a bird in the hand is worth more than a bird in the bush", since even when the games do come, that will only provide a parity which does not exist currently, no clear advantage can be assumed. So a PS3 in the future might end up being comparable with the 360 now and in the future.

As for styling...I have to disagree with the good doctor...PS3 looks like it belongs on my kitchen counter with a grease drip tray under the front of it.

Personally, all other things being equal...see which controller you prefer...I can't stand the 'triggers' on the SIXAXIS myself, fingers always felt like they were slipping off, even though they weren't...my aunt had a little Nissan minivan thingy...could never stand to sit in the passenger seat, always felt like I was ready to go out the windshield...

I'm really not sure about the future but at the moment the Xbox 360 is definitely the better choice. And like everyone else says it comes down to which exclusives you prefer, I personally lean towards the likes of Halo and Project Gotham over Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo. Next year should be a make or break year for Sony in this generation with a lot of high profile AAA titles on the horizon, but again it comes down to which of these interest you more and indeed which console they are on. Just have a look at the list of releases for next year on each console and make your own mind up.

Another thing you might want to consider is the new installment of the GTA series. If this is a game that excites you then I would urge you to go for the Xbox 360 simply because this version will have exclusive downloadable additional missions and storylines further extending the experience. This is not something that will be available on the PS3. But ultimately, the choice is yours.

i have both and unless you have your eyes closed I'd go for an xbox, the playstations is slowly dying, it has hardly any exclusives anymore, the online play is bad .... and i mean really bad, the online infrustructure in general is even worse. while with the xbox you have great online play, great online infrastructure and AMAZING GAMES but best of all and i mean the best are achievements, once you play games with achievements there's no point in playing games without it, its pointless

I hate microsoft but in the xbox they have created something amazing, sony however and going down the line of Sega (if you no what i mean)

But SEGA made good games. :( [/fanboy]
Sorry, you asked for no fanboys didn't you? ;)

Hm, out of the two I'd say get an XBOX 360 if you're getting it as a Christmas present. That way you can enjoy a larger selection of games, and if online play is your thing then getting a subscription to Live might be worth adding to the Christmas wishlist too.

The PS3 has potential (God I hate that phrase) but it's not really been tapped yet as you can probably see. There are much more games out there for the platform than many people would like to tell you (exaggeration FTW), there are just not many standout titles that make you distinguish a PS3 from an XBOX. Uncharted and Ratchet are about as good as you can get at the moment.

Buy 3 Wii's. Then sell them all on EvilBay and buy both the 360 and the PS3.

Good idea, no?
You wouldn't be ripping off gamers, c'mon let's face it.

Better to just buy a 360, Rock Band, a year of LIVE! and have money left over for more games...

This maybe true, though I am STILL enjoying Motorstorm. But Ratchet is SUCH a good game. I liked Uncharted a bundle, but I've been playing R+C for what sems like three times as long, and I'm still not finished. I know Uncharted has more legs if you go back for all the pick-ups and achievements... but I'm not one for retracing my steps. But R+C makes you do it. As you come up against tougher bosses, you need bigger weapons, and so you have to go back and re-explore already visited worlds.

I was not that impressed with R+C at first - too similar to previous versions. But now I've almost completed it, I'm soo not looking forward to it being over.

Wow, I was sick of MotorStorm as soon as I beat it. But then I'm not that into 'arcade' racers, or modes. Ridge Racer is anathema to me, I've even disdained to play PGR4.

Is it online play that has you still playing?

Of course. And that's why I have respect for the 360. It does on-line so much better than the PS3 does. Sony under-estimated the importance of on-line, and it's gonna be a game of catch up for them.

I have a PS3 at home and use on of the office's 360 hen there's something I want to play. But when the holidays are over, I hope to have a PS3 AND a 360 at home permanently.

No hints there. My wife doesn't read this.

Yeah, the one guy I know who had one didn't have broadband, so that was one thing that I missed out on.
I had great fun driving the big rigs through the mud, I can imagine it must be compelling online. Is the online lobby-based? or do you have to find a new game every race? I still don't care for SIXAXIS 'triggers' though, and I abandoned all other throttle controls in favor of those with the advent of the Xbox. MotorStorm 2, with improved online, many more tracks, and rumble function for a new DualShock 3 with concave triggers (and while I'm wishing, give it a Forza style paint shop...better yet, let me import images from the camera) would be a world beater (or even a comprable wheel to the 360's fire hazard), IMNSHO...we wants one for 360, bugger PGR...

I could see an improved MotorStorm being used for say, team sports...the possible variants are legion...say pairs of a rig and a buggy and the first team to both finish wins, or 3 trucks and a rig per side, first team whose rig crosses wins

Then I'd recycle the engine and physics and suchlike (if possible) into a (good) vehicular combat game or racer, or mebbe even a post-apocalypic BioWare style RPG with a (much better than Mass Effect) vehicular combat element...Fallout on wheels, and an excuse for really big guns :) Online multiplayer, so you could have buses with multiple combat stations, turrets and suchlike, manned by players...man that would rawk. Do it Sony, I dare you to make me love you again. You got all that damn space on the disc...USE IT.
