God of War 2 – first trailer

You’ll have someone's eye out with that!

As we reported last week God of War 2 details are beginning to trickle out and the game is now scheduled for a February 2007 release.

Internet gaming forums are already alight with speculation as to whether or not this game will match up to David Jaffe’s groundbreaking predecessor. First signs are very encouraging - check out this first gameplay trailer;

So, do we think that God of War 2 is the last truly great videogame to grace the PlayStation 2? The PS2’s swansong proper? A quick survey around the SPOnG office revealed the following mix of opinions on the matter:

“It looks great, plenty more of the same with the grand environments and comical boss death blows - eyeball yanking, wing hacking and the rest,” said Gareth.

Gavin, who is perhaps our biggest in-house GOW-head added in his ten-penneth: “That looks so cool! Don’t know about swansong, but Sony claimed a 10 year lifespan for PS2. God of War 2 will be the last big game that will be an essential PS2 purchase.”

Andy meanwhile seemed to get a little bit confused, pitching in the following: “It looks like a less gay Shadow of the Colossus... and where's Nic Cage? He was in the film.” Errr, no sir. That was Lord of War. And was about arms dealers, not about pulling the eyes out of Mythological Greek beasties.

GOW2’s Creative Director, the straight-talking David Jaffe, told a recent interviewer that: “I find it so obnoxious when I hear a game developer talking about ‘we’re doing a trilogy’….’it’s like – ‘fuck you and your trilogy’… make ONE game, make it good… and then, you know what, if I liked your first game then maybe I’ll buy your second game.”

Attaboy! Don’t be afraid to speak your brains David! Jaffe goes on to outline how God of War 2 is merely an extension of the ‘core’ story of Kratos and God of War, drawing links with the Conan series – and the similar development of that mythological storyline.

Please just say there's no "attack of the clones" section again! I almost pulled out my own eye over that one!
