Konami has just informed us that we are due a new DS slice of Castlevania pie this November. This is good news for all those gamers who - like SPOnG - enjoy playing handheld Castlevanias in the loo as a secret skive off of work.
This is also extra good news, as it means we won’t have to talk to our families again this Christmas, as we will have something more fulfilling and fun to do. Namely, playing Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
In the game, you get to control two different characters - vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Orlean, a young girl with magical abilities. Your aim is to thwart a plan to resurrect Dracula's Castle and unleash a reign of evil upon the unsuspecting world. But here’s a thing – it’s all set in World War II. Which is slightly strange, but, it’s Castlevania, so it must work.
Portrait of Ruin's WWII setting attempts to capture the “Chaos and suffering of the era, with thousands of lost souls wandering the world in search of salvation." Yeah, right. Whatever. Let’s hear about the game.
Apparently, these wandering souls are trying to rebuild Dracula’s crib in an attempt to escape their limbo, but they get waylaid by a pair of evil Vampire sisters out to resurrect their master's home for their own nefarious plans. The game is a looking very much like a return to the classic Castlevania 2D platform action, using a side-on view to oversee the scrolling stages.
