One of the things SPOnG is most looking forward to at E3 this year is heading down to Melrose to check out the I Am 8 Bit exhibition, the second annual extravaganza of gaming-inspired art, from over 100 artists in all sorts of different mediums. Pretentious art 'happenings' are all fine and dandy with us if they feature amazing videogame-inspired pieces such as these.

Check out these pics here for a taster of the show, and check out their website for more details on the exhibition, on the accompanying book and - if you happen to be minted - on how to buy the artwork on show.

SPOnG’s favourites are the Hunter S Thompson Duckshoot pic and the Pacman grenade. We wish PR companies would send us more stuff like this. Receiving awesome tat like this makes us want to cover their otherwise average games soooo much more. Do they not know this?

Back to the exhibition: it's on now and goes on until May 19, at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

MTV covered the launch party for the event, which means it is also ‘mainstream cool’. Ahem. For more photos of the exhibition and of the uber-cool LA people at the launch event, check out these pics
