Sensible Soccer – First Gameplay Video

Chris Waddle! Superfast, big-headed, be-mulleted goal machines.

Codemasters has just released a superb gameplay video from the forthcoming re-make of the classic footy kickabout, Sensible Soccer.

First half
What you notice straight away from the video is that the game is fast. Hilariously fast. And as it’s set to some upbeat bouncy Europop with football hooters and airhorns blasting in the background (a remix of the legendary "Goal-scoring Superstar Hero" theme tune) it makes us smile in anticipation of the sheer fun we know that we are going to have playing this game.

Second half
The second thing that you notice is that there are loads of goals. This is going to be a very-fast, hugely enjoyable soccer arcade game where it’s all about double-figure scorelines and the goalmouth action. No pussyfooting about in midfield in this game.

Time added on
Plus, perhaps most importantly of all, the players have funny, big, lolloping heads. And some of them look as daft as our Stefan did, the day he had the mullet of shame styled at that ludicrously expensive barber shop in London’s fashionable Soho. Very Nathan Barley, sir.

Post-match analysis
Codemasters new Sensible Soccer, SPOnG hopes, is going to be a true return to form for this arcade soccer classic. To proffer an analogy, SS has spent a few years in the lower divisions, and even had the administrators in on occasion, but it's back, stronger than before. Sensible Soccer has turned the corner and we're over the moon, Brian.

There is a real gap in the market for an unashamedly UNrealistic soccer arcade game. A game which doesn’t set out to be a simulation of ‘the beautiful game’ a la Pro Evo and FIFA, but instead one which can be played by the casual and the hardcore gamer, the football fan and the non-fan alike. We think that the new Sensible Soccer might well be this game. And, clearly, Codemasters think this too.

This short video, for example, crams in 18 spectacular Sensi goals and shows off the game's lightning-fast action, mesmerising dribbling, long range shots with huge amounts of after-touch, insanely-quick end-to-end action and spectacular banana shot free-kicks.

As we reported last month Sensible Soccer will give players 360-degree control over every move they make, will feature an astounding 50 different competitions, including World and European Cup events, plus friendlies and DIY competitions for instant multiplayer kick-abouts.

SPOnG heard from Sensi's legendary Jon Hare this morning too, who had the following to say: "I personally believe that both PES and FIFA are starting to get old and predictable, victims of their own success, slow and uninspiring, desperately in need of a shot of adrenalin to liven them up."

SPOnG's anticipation and excitement levels for and about this World Cup summer just doubled after watching this clip. Go get warmed up!

Wow, that looks pretty good! Not like the disaster that was Sensi 98... we're talking back to core values, people. Which can only be a GOOD thing!
