Revolution Back-Cat May Lack Rare Gems

First third-party snag emerges

Posted by Staff
According to reports washing onto the shore of gaming following the veritable typhoon that was last week's GDC, some big name titles could be missing from Nintendo's Virtual Console download service scheduled to be deployed for its looming Revolution console.

The relationship between Nintendo and Microsoft, and the possible use of games developed by Rare has inevitably flared up into a bit of an issue, with US sources claiming both Microsoft and Rare staffers debunking recent chatter which led the industry to believe Nintendo 64 monsters such as GoldenEye 007, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Banjo-Kazooie had been agreed for retrospective release.

The nature of the games industry and its endless appetite for buying and selling things, means any possible roll-out of GoldenEye would involve a sub-license clause being agreed between Microsoft, Nintendo and Electronic Arts. Basically, it's unlikely in the extreme that our dreams of Revmote-controlled Facility killing sprees will materialise into anything of substance.

Of course, Nintendo-owned IP, including the sublime Donkey Kong Country series, will be available, though it's fair to say that the Nintendo 64 titles developed by Rare would have been the jewels in the crown of what's shaping up to be an amazing service delivering some of the best game of all time into your living room.

Those limbering up for the race to snag a day one Revolution can console themselves with the news that MegaDrive and PC Engine titles have been confirmed for the Nintendo machine, full details of which you can read here.

Sheesh, why don't they just make a non-exclusive agreement - they'll still make money out of it...

Oh, I forgot - Microsoft doesn't care about profit - they just want to get their name on everything you own!

It reminds me a bit of before the Playstation existed - some people used to say "imagine if Sega and Nintendo (or more) worked together to make a console - it would be amazing!"

Even if GE did appear on the VC, you still wouldn't be playing it with the 'Revmote'.

if microsoft agreed to let nintendo make GE etc available for download this would lend the revolution a lot of power. by not, they can achieve an awful lot.You said it urself SPOnG,the "jewels in the crown" can effectively be none existant with microsoft making the decision regarding.bastards.

i understabd it from a business point of view.

I don't know if this is technicaly possible but wouldn't it be cool if Goldeneye and Pefrect Dark were available for download on both Xbox360 and Revo and both playable online against each other.

In fact how's about doing the same with Street Fighter? How cool would that be!!

Why is everyone so in love with GoldenEye? It's such a horrible game.

At the time it came out, there were far better FPS titles on the PC... titles that weren't rendered in Fuzzy Brown-O-Vision™, and that were infinitely more fun in deathmatch: getting used to the clumsy controls was a massive barrier to entry for anyone bar sad students who had all day to hone their skills.

I will say one thing positive about it, though: The music was fantastic. I loved some of the different arrangements based around the main Bond theme.

I played it WAY too much at uni, but it didn't take all 3 years to figure out the control mechanism. In fact, i'd say it was incredibly intuitive, and is still the best virtual interpretation of pointing and aiming a gun.

Hopefully the hackers will figure out a way to play these classic Rare titles on the Revolution.
Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 were great games, but the 3rd and 64 version were dissapointing.

that would be class.i wouldnt tamper with my beatufil revolution though.

i was a relative late comer to 007 i think i got it out of GAME,2nd hand.the reason i loved my N64 was because of golden eye and zelda's.

Nintendo doesn't need any type of green light from MS to release Goldeye on it's VC. Problem with Goldeneye that it's a Bond-game and only EA has the rights to publish Bond-games so Nintendo only has to strike a deal with EA since Nintendo does own the publishing rights to Goldeneye (but not of Conker and Perfect Dark and some other Rare N64 game, maybe Jet force Gemini). All the other Rare-games Nintendo has the adequate rights too.

This is more some Xbox-fanboy jibberish so they can say "yeah so you have NES, SNES, N64 and GENESIS games on it but you don't have Goldeneye eeey!! HA!" untill EA gives Nintendo the green light.

You have a point and I hope you are right about the licensing, I am sure Nintendo could come to some sort of deal with EA.
Having Goldeneye on the Revolution will be a major asset.

GoldenEye is as overrated as Halo is.

Get over it.

I will prefer to have Rondo of Blood in my Rev, than another FPS...

Goldeneye isn't overated though I respect your opinion. Goldeneye came at a time when even PC fps games were loosing their way somewhat and Rare gave PC fps developers a wake kick in the arse. And another kick to film license game developers too.

Fast forward to our space year 2006 and now every console fps uses a similar analogue set up to Goldeneye. They know what Rare did was something special, despite N64 not being as hot as a PC techwise. Even PC fps games have benefited from Goldeneye somehow.

Anyway I'm sure EA will iron something out with Nintendo. Goldeneye is still an N64 game.

Honestly, no one knows who has these rights or what's been done behind the scenes. So claiming you just so happen to know more than us is kind of silly.
