In a nice little twist on Nintendo platforming tradition, the latest DS title featuring Princess Peach puts the dappy pink blonde right at the centre of the action.
In her videogaming debut, Peach is no longer all girly and in need of rescuing. Oh no. In Super Princess Peach on DS, you control a platforming Princess Peach, as she has to rescue the daft plump plumbers Mario and Luigi.
The story goes like this: that rapscallion reptile Bowser has got a hold of something called a Magical Vibe Scepter, he’s kidnapped Mario and Luigi, and is holding them at his castle on Vibe Island. Perhaps Bowser's castle needs some emergency plumbing doing to it, we’re not sure.
Anyways, the delectable Princess Peach decides to give chase and a fairly familiar Mario Bros-style 2D side-scrolling adventure ensues. Oh, and we forgot to mention that Peach is assisted by her magical parasol, Perry. Oh, and also that she is able to channel her emotional vibes into various special abilities: floating through the air when she's happy, burning through bridges when she's mad, or making vegetation grow with her tears when she’s gloomy. Vintage Nintendo gameplay.
Bizarrely, when Peach is gloomy and weepy, she also runs incredibly fast, during which time she's invincible. When she is calm, she also becomes invincible and slowly regains her health. In SPOnG’s experience most girls are very much like this when they get ‘all emotional’, apart from the incredibly fast running bit. And the 'flying when happy' bit.
