A new homebrew DS application, named DS2Key, has been released onto the Internet by some inspired hackers. Upon loading DS2Key on your DS and your computer, it turns your Mario Kart console into something quite special indeed - a Wi-Fi controller for your PC.
This, you might think, could initially seem a little bit of a pointless waste of any self-respecting fanboy's time. However, when we think about what this could mean and about the various other possibilities this entails, SPOnG is actually quite impressed.
As website DSfanboy.com points out: “It's like a folding little Wavebird expressly designed for your emulated SNES games (of which you own the originals, by the way!)”
Although DS2Key only makes use of the buttons on the DS, there could well be something developed in the future which also makes use of the handheld’s innovative touchscreen in a similar way.
Again, DSfanboy.com, perhaps getting a little bit over-excited, extrapolates what such a development might mean, thinking aloud about the possibilities of using your DS as a universal lifestyle controller for your entire surroundings: “Using the DS as a universal remote control unit for your various pieces of equipment sounds like a great idea, with each one getting its own little virtual touch-screen interface. Want to turn down the air conditioner a notch? Just spin the 2D temperature knob with your stylus. How about turning on the room's light? Just slide your stylus over the virtual switch.”
It’s certainly a nice idea and SPOnG will be spending the day with our mates from Nintendo UK tomorrow, so we’ll be sure to ask what they think about it. SPOnG should have some juicy Big N news after tomorrow’s launch event at the Science Museum. The event is being billed as a launch for Nintendo’s forthcoming Brain Training DS games, which SPOnG is already hyped about.
Tomorrow’s event will also involve a round table discussion entitled “Call that Entertainment??!!” – where a panel of ‘media and entertainment experts’ plan to have a lively debate about quality ‘me’ time, entertainment and popular culture! SPOnG loves mass debates over games.
The panel of experts includes, bizarrely, Camilla Wright, editor of Popbitch, Adam Curtis, producer of the award winning ‘Power of Nightmares’ and David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo. The discussion is to be led by consumer behaviour think tank The Future Foundation, which plans to ask the following culture-jamming zeitgeist busters: Is Britain dumbing down? Is celebrity the only way to capture people’s interest? What is it with the iPod generation? And moreover, what exactly is the future of entertainment…?
Watch this space for a full report on tomorrow’s ‘happening’. More DS re-design and homebrew news to follow as we get it.
