One of SPOnG’s all time favourite Dreamcast and PS2 games, Sega’s sublime music-shooter Rez, is rumoured to be in development for PSP.
Shacknews.com reported over the weekend that, according to their source at Sega, a PSP port of Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s classic is "...sounding like a pretty sure thing".
Whilst a handheld version of this classic videogame would seem to make total sense to the hardcore Sega faithful, it might not make as much sense to Sega’s bottom line-driven sales teams. SPOnG hates to be the voice of commercial reason, but it also has to be remembered that neither versions of Rez sold in any significant numbers.
The game is one of those strange things – a critically-lauded, much-loved classic that very few people actually bought or played. On the other hand, for this very reason, it could well be given the ICO treatment, with a polished PS2 re-release coming out alongside a PSP version, thus making the game actually available again, outside of rare CEX sightings.
SPOnG spoke to our sources at Sega UK this morning who refused to comment on the rumour.
Ah well, we sure hope that we do get to see Rez on PSP soon, although we will wait to hear confirmation directly from Sega before we get too overexcited.

I bought Rez, I played Rez, I loved Rez.
I also finished Rez in about 20 minutes (it might have taken longer! I was having fun, and we all know how time flies under that particular set of circumstances), the first time I played it. And that made me think that I had been conned in some way.
Actually in almost exactly the same way as that other great value for money Dreamcast classic, 18-Wheeler American Pro Trucker. I seem to remember that taking nearly double figure minutes to complete. At least I didn't pay for that pleasure...

I completed Rez in double-quick fashion. Why don't I feel conned? I'd imagine it's the dozens of times I've replayed it. To this day, I still pick up Rez when searching for that gaming quick hit, even passing over such obvious examples as Puzzle Fighter and Crazy Taxi. For those reasons, I'd say that Rez makes an excellent candidate for a handheld game. I'd personally go out and buy twelve, and I don't even have a PSP yet.
Oh, and at least in the US (the only market where it really matters, due to the lack of a DC release), Rez has already been re-issued.

Hmmm. I don't think some shop finding a stash of unsold stock really counts as a re-issue.
I think for a re-issue, the original (or another) publisher has to manufacture and distribute new units, in the same (or different) packaging.

But if you'd read the article, you'd have seen that your preconditions for a re-issue were met in full:
"In between these titles Game Quest Direct were hashing out the final details for two major reprints: Gitaroo-Man a quirky Japanese music game created by Inix (who also recently did Ouendan for the Nintendo DS) and the psychedelic music shooter Rez from Sega. Unlike the speedy process with Atlus and Capcom these reprints took months to work out. Negotiating prices, filing paperwork and waiting for Sony to officially press these games was a long waiting process. Like the other reprints each of these cost over a hundred thousand for each and Game Quest Direct had to give all of the finical security to bring these niche titles back into the marketplace."
Game Quest Direct, in agreement with the original publishers, had new units manufactured (incidentally, in the same packaging) and distributed. If there's any part of this I've misunderstood then feel free to correct me, but that passage does give me confidence that Rez has already been legitimately re-issued.
