Nevrax, the innovative French developer/publisher of the massively-multiplayer science fantasy game The Saga of Ryzom yesterday announced that the game had received the coveted Reader's Choice Award for Best Story from MMORPG.com.
Its good to see that whilst WoW is clearly the market leader in the mondo-bizarro of MMORPG’s (please, can someone come up with a better acronym!) there are still niche, yet growing audiences for more leftfield, original and inventive titles such as The Saga of Ryzom.
It also seems that the mixture of Sci-Fi and Fantasy themes in MMO’s (there, that’s much better) is increasingly popular, following on from Codemasters' recent announcement of its forthcoming RF Online, which we reported on yesterday. Commenting on the award, Nevrax founder and creative director David Cohen-Corval said, "We couldn't be more thrilled at receiving this award from MMORPG.com… We've always strived to make the intricate story of sci-fi meets fantasy a compelling one. Now we know that MMORPG.com readers agree!"
Nevrax plans to build upon the growing success of The Saga of Ryzom - which has now been online since September 2004, and has firmly established itself across the English-speaking world - and will be soon be releasing Ryzom Ring, a free expansion to keep all those happy Ryzom-er’s Ryzom-ing away.
Earlier today, SPOnG caught up briefly with Jessica Mulligan who is Consultant and Executive Producer on The Saga of Ryzom. Jess had the following to say about getting the award yesterday: "It is nice to receive any award, but we're especially honoured by this one, because it comes from the players. We try very hard to make sure the players have a direct effect on the storyline; this award shows we're succeeding."
And speaking about Ryzom Ring and about the future of The Saga in general, Jess added, "If you think our story is cool right now, just wait a few weeks. When our expansion pack launches and players have access to the world creation and story-building tools, you're going to see something totally new in online gaming: players actually adding land, missions and quests to the game."
She added, "Players have been asking for this for years; we'll be the first MMO to give it to them."
Well, while WoW is disappearing from shelves quicker than lager turns to piss, its good to see that there is real MMO gaming innovation happening in a small studio somewhere in gay Paris. SPOnG wishes Nevrax well with the expansion pack and we’ll certainly bring you some more news on how players make use of the new tools Ryzom Ring brings to their game.
