The fast-growing market for MMORPG’s in Europe is outstripping even the most ambitious analyst's expectations. Blizzard Entertainment has announced this morning that its hugely-popular World of Warcraft has now topped one million customers in Europe, based on numbers from Media Control & GFK panels across Europe as well as Blizzard’s internal studies and account data.

This means that the total worldwide population for WoW is now more than 5.5 million customers, which is more than the number of males in Greater London. You can check the latest census data if you don’t believe us.

Ah well, SPOnG supposes it at least keeps them off the streets.

When the game first went on sale back in February 2005, the estimated market for MMORPGs in Europe was around 250,000 – so this latest figure means that the market has quadrupled in less than a year. So that's why all those other publishers are tripping over themselves trying to develop their own MMORPG IP.

Blizzard Europe now employs over 400 staff encompassing 22 different nationalities. This is Blizzard’s second biggest worldwide operation, due to the fact that WoW is now available in English, French, and German languages in Europe.

"It is extremely rewarding to see so many European players enjoying World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "The players have supported our belief in the European MMORPG market, and we thank them for helping us make World of Warcraft one of the most popular games in the world."

Blizzard is currently putting the final touches to The Burning Crusade, which is the first expansion pack for World of Warcraft, to keep both old and new players interested in the game and to prevent them jumping ship to one of the many other new MMORPG experiences now available. The expansion will up the character level cap to 70, introduce new flying mounts, and add the profession of Jewelcrafting, among numerous other features. wOOt.
