Okay, it's a good news / bad news kind of situation we're dealing with here. And, in keeping with tradition, we'll ask you which you would like to read first. Should you follow the norm, preferring to take it on the chin before having your spirits lifted with the 'silver cloud' read on as normal.
If however, you prefer good news as you appetiser, followed by a main course of gloom, skip to paragraph four, then backtrack to read paragraph three. Note: If you do it this way, don't forget to read the end bit of the story. We might make a joke. Though we'll probably just promise to keep you updated on things like we usually we do. We don't know yet because we haven't written it, so it's as exciting for us as it is for you!
Shadow of the Colossus, the [insert tired spiritual ICO/arthouse reference here] game developed over in the land of Japan, won't be released into Europe until sometime in February 2006, or a million years, depending on how great a fan you are of the series. As ever, the French, Germans, Spanish, etc are to blame. Refusing to speak proper like us (and therefore rendering themselves unable to understand us when we want chips after our nine pints of San Miguel) means the European version of the game has to be localised to their own non-English patois. We'd also blame the rest of the world for having rubbish tellies, forcing SCE to rejig its code for our superior PAL system without dropping even more frames during gameplay, but that's another story.
Good news however is that a rework of the giant-chinning game is looking likely to comprise part of the early phase of PlayStation 3 software availability. We've been picking up on rumours that a PS3 version of the game is underway from contacts in Japan for some time now, rumours that have filtered down to print magazines in the US. Depending on who you talk to, three options are open at time of press. The first, as we mentioned, is a reworked, souped up version of the current game, complete with co-op multiplayer. The second is a straight port, though of course, tailored for HD supercomputers. The third is a straight sequel to the PS2 game that is currently enjoying critical acclaim in the US and Europe.
So stay tuned to SPOnG in the coming months for clarification. We'll make sure you don't 'Wanda' what's happening with this 'Colossally' big franchise. Sorry.
