Total UK sales of Nintendogs have so far totalled 131,303, according to ChartTrack figures released today. Not a figure to be sniffed at. And SPOnG would happily rub all those cynics’ noses in doggy doo, who only months ago were making noises about Nintendog’s never taking off outside of Japan. The accusation that it was just too strange and 'Japanesey' for the UK/US was clearly misplaced. The sales figures tell a very different story.
If you have been living in a cave or a mental institution for the last six months, let us refresh your memory about what this beautifully simple game is all about. Nintendogs lets owners train and care for lifelike puppies using the Nintendo DS system’s touch screen and microphone. In the US, Nintendogs became not only the hottest-selling video game, but the best-selling new franchise ever for a portable video game system, while in Japan it is a truly cultural phenomenon.
The game has successfully also opened up new markets amongst younger gamers and female gamers. No mean feat, and something which SPOnG applauds Nintendo for achieving.
Look on eBay now. Look up Nintendogs. Pink and blue DS / Nintendogs bundles are changing hands for £220. This is over twice the £99 RRP. This means people want them. A lot.
And, thankfully for stressed-out parents across the UK, today Nintendo has announced that it is shipping out a significant additional number of the hugely popular doggy-sim, pink and blue DS console bundles to try to meet the incredible pre-Christmas demand.
Its fair to say that, with stocks of Xbox 360 depleted, Nintendo seems to have cornered the market with Nintendogs; in providing one of this Christmas’ "must have" toys.
