Sony Exploit Righteous Indignation

Inflammatory advert has predictable effect

Sony Exploit Righteous Indignation
Oops. It seems that last week’s Sony adverts featuring a Christ-like figure wearing a crown of thorns has excited the righteous ire of the ever, er, prickly Catholics. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a picture of a young chap wearing the thorny crown bearing PlayStation button symbols and the tagline ’10 Years of Passion’ was condemned by Italian catholics as blasphemous.

We think you’ll agree it pretty much goes without saying that the clever marketing bods at Sony will have foreseen the inevitable outcry and that this is another example of one of those marketing campaigns that is supposed to be banned or withdrawn, with the resulting wave of free publicity being the end goal of the cynical company behind it. Which we are actually contributing to now, so we’ll stop.

But you have to wonder, if there are any Christians at all working at Sony (and we’re not saying there are), what do they make of it? Are you a Christian gamer? Do you mind Sony exploiting the sacred tenets of your faith in their quest for money? They say you should never discuss politics, religion or family with friends. All the same, we tentatively invite you to in the forum below. Just don’t get carried away…

I am not a Christian, but the ad campaign was clearly initiated to piss off the christian majority, if only for shock value. Sony is kinda desperate, first they bash competitors' systems and now they want to piss off christians and their God. But you know what? Christians, being forgiving and all that stuff, will forget about this whole thing and pledge their support to Satan-Worshipping Sony. :)

I'm no devout Christian, hell the only thing I have to do with the religion is a baptism at birth, but I can really imagine this backfiring on them. America's a big market, and there are a lot of pretty devout Christians there. I can't imagine Sony being happy if they all suddenly got rid of all things Playstation and adopted their rivals instead.

Of course, right now they don't have to care; the next generation is around the corner, and PS2 has sold enough. As long as they kiss and make up by the time PS3 comes out, they won't even feel the damage.

Of course, if they all go out and buy 360s...
