PlayStation 3 Metal Gear Solid 4 revealed

First details and images trickle forth

In what is becoming a fairly irritating annual event, Famitsu has blown the lid on one of the biggest games on the planet just hours before the official, all singing, all dancing video presentation at Tokyo Game Show.

This year, we have a few pages detailing Konami and Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid 4, the PlayStation 3 exclusive (for now) that has truly captured the imagination of Sony next-gen dreamers…

We had received information from US magazine PSM, which claimed Metal Gear Solid 4 was a cross between Rambo and Black Hawk Down, though this now looks to have stemmed from little more than Konami’s pre-existing announcement that its new game would be in an urban setting. Famitsu makes no mention of PSM’s AI controlled sidekicks.

Of course, the big question raised is: Is this presentation as ‘next-gen’ as was expected? Metal Gear has long been slated as the PlayStation 3 title – expected relatively early in the console’s lifecycle and coming from the finest stable in Japan. Perhaps the big problem we have right now as we leaf through Famitsu is deciding where artwork ends and in-game screenshots begin.

These questions will not be answered today, however - check SPOnG on Saturday when we’ll have seen the video presentation Konami is planing, then we can all spend a few hours discussing whether what we saw was in-game footage or CG, a la Killzone…

Those metal gears look pretty small (the ones behind the marines on the tanks). Either way, how the hell are you going to sneak past an army that's marching down the street?
