Sonic Riders – First details!

Multiplatform skateboarding revealed

Posted by Staff
Sega has revealed the first details on Sonic Riders, the game we found out, and reported on, yesterday. At time of press, little was known about the title, believed to be a GameCube exclusive.

Today Sega has moved to clarify things, showing a Sonic-themed skateboarding game for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube, due to be playable at TGS next week and launched in Japan this winter.

Of course, this isn’t the news Sonic fans were hoping for. The Sonic franchise has been well-milked over the years and cash-ins are par for the course, though with next-gen Sonic imminent and Sonic outings on DS and PSP looming, some may wonder what the point of this game is…

Sonic Riders will be overseen by Space Channel 5 and Puyo producer Yuda Koshi and actually doesn’t seem too bad. A system of air-riding will be employed, with players encouraged to slipstream opponents as much as possible. A large cast has been confirmed, with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, etc, joined by some quite rubbish-sounding new characters, including Storm the Albatross, Jet the Hawk and Web the Swallow, all equipped with extreme attitudes…

Well, at least they’re not all packing Uzis.

You know, that game looks pretty hot, and if they do it right, it should be a very good game. The problem with spinoffs is that they generally don't play well, and attention to detail tends to be minimal. But then the Mario spinoffs are very well built indeed, so let's hope this game becomes one of the better spinoffs.

You know, I never ever thought of that but you're totally right. This is now my most anticipated game. At least for the next half an hour.

Looks like it could be a new lease of life for the Sonic series, some of the recent titles have'nt been the best (I was really dissapointed with Sonic Heroes), and I have to admit it does look cool, not sure about some of the new characters though.
