Sega has revealed the first details on Sonic Riders, the game we
found out, and reported on, yesterday. At time of press, little was known about the title, believed to be a GameCube exclusive.
Today Sega has moved to clarify things, showing a Sonic-themed skateboarding game for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube, due to be playable at TGS next week and launched in Japan this winter.
Of course, this isn’t the news Sonic fans were hoping for. The Sonic franchise has been well-milked over the years and cash-ins are par for the course, though with next-gen Sonic imminent and Sonic outings on DS and PSP looming, some may wonder what the point of this game is…
Sonic Riders will be overseen by Space Channel 5 and Puyo producer Yuda Koshi and actually doesn’t seem too bad. A system of air-riding will be employed, with players encouraged to slipstream opponents as much as possible. A large cast has been confirmed, with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, etc, joined by some quite rubbish-sounding new characters, including Storm the Albatross, Jet the Hawk and Web the Swallow, all equipped with extreme attitudes…
Well, at least they’re not all packing Uzis.
