Play-Yan Micro – Like an Animated Postage Stamp

But very beautiful, of course…

SPOnG has followed the progress of the Game Boy Micro since before it was announced at this year’s E3. We knew a new Game Boy was coming out and we knew it was coming out this year. We even knew its codename – Game Boy OXY.

Since then, we’ve had a good close look at it, being the first publication to get hold of one and, for want of a better phrase, pull it to pieces and look at its guts. images of which you can browse over here.

We saw some ropey snaps of the Play-Yan Micro, the media player capable of hosting movies, pictures and music for reworked Game Boy Advance some weeks ago, and now we’ve received a detailed breakdown of the unit from Nintendo, along with nice, official images.

Again, the Play-Yan uses SD Multimedia cards and will this time play MPG4 and ASF video. It will host MP3 music files and carry as many images as you can fit on your card in JPG format.

An updated and re-worked browser system is promised along with a skinning option to ensure you can peruse your files in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Enjoy the snaps on the right for now and we’ll bring you details on a Play-Yan release outside of Japan as soon as it reaches our ground-planted ears.

I know this is probably pointless, but can the Play-Yan Micro route the sound to the GameBoy Micro's sound system? I find it a waste of portable playback pottential and space on the Play-Yan to have a separate sound processor.

I'm aware this all comes down to the stupid idea of needing an adapter for the GBA-SP for headphones to work, so Nintendo may have just HAD to avoid routing the sound to the GBA's SPU.

So now, we have TWO headphone jacks on our GameBoy, and we can't listen to our music through the speakers. How retarded is that?

The Play Yan, Play Yan Micro, GBA Movie Player V.1, 2, and 3 all output sound through the Game Boy Advance/SP/Micro speakers. The headphone jack on the unit is essentially a port re-location device for the SP. So, you don't need to rely on the GBA SP's specialized headphones.

So, yes. Yes it can.

Also, I love the fact that the unit can use JPGs now. I've been prepping GBA MP compatible versions of a few comics strips I draw. So, it will be a good idea to prep a few JPG versions in the GBA Native resolution. (240wide, 160high pixels.)

Anyhow, for the price of about $100 for the GB Micro, $50 for the Play Yan Micro, and $60 for a 1GB SD Card.... you can have what is essentially an iPod shuffle that plays movies and pictures. You KNOW I'm down for that! Actually, it'll be cheaper for me.. as I already have a few 1GB SD cards laying around. My GBA MP is currently enjoying a 4GB Compact Flash Card. Just for the hell of it, I had the extended edition of Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings on it the other day, along with Office Space, Toy Story 1, South Park the Movie, all of the Gunsmith Cats OVAs, the first episodes of Noir, Kaleidostar, and Elfen Lied, and a ton of internet flash animations. I remember seeing a person with a PSP at an anime convention. He was watching an episode of Elfen Lied on his unit and I was like. "Oh! I can do that too! On a Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS. But I have more space, and I can play NES, GB, GG, SMS, and GBA roms at FULL SPEED."

Well I'm up for a dose of PlayYan, I'm glad Nintendo have looked deeper into the potential of this nifty little product. No more of those GBA cart flicks now that we have this.

Hey Philip, looks like you are a fellow anime fan/ artist. Didn't know you coul fit so much stuff onto a Play Yan. All we need now is a release date for u.k/eu. Taking my DS on the move well never be the same again when I have my anime and games on the move.

Bring it on, Nintendo.
