Sega’s secret Revolution

Old games, and new, loom

It looks like Sega is perhaps the first major force to really throw substantial weight behind Satoru Iwata’s full Revolution dream with the firm seemingly greenlighting new and back-catalogue support.

In an interview with Nintendo Power Magazine, Sega America president Simon Jeffrey has spoken candidly about the firm’s current thinking regarding the still highly-secret Nintendo platform.

"The Nintendo fan, I think, is very similar to the Sega fan of old," Jeffrey said. "I think Sega and Nintendo have similar software philosophies. A product like Sonic is very family-oriented. It's all about entertainment rather than trying to be controversial or anything like that. It's pure, good old-fashioned entertainment." As to whether this offers further hints as to the way Revolution will be pitched, or we’re all just going mad not knowing, remains to be seen.

Jeffrey continued, “"The Nintendo platforms have been great for Sonic and the classic franchises. We think Revolution can absolutely be the same. We're very interested in Revolution at the moment. We obviously haven't made any announcements, but we, like other people, are talking with Nintendo about what Revolution will be, about potential opportunities on Revolution."

Of course, die-hard old school fans will be crossing their fingers in anticipation of a substantial Sega back-catalogue being offered via Revolution’s download programme, a possibility that right now seems more than likely.

As soon as we know more, we’ll let you know.

I'd be game for more Sega support for Rev, if we get more japanese games. Problem is that Sammy seem to think we don't like japanese style games when we do (this is especially so with the popularity of japanese anime etc).

If more of Sega's output becomes like what many western developers are offering then some of the culture exchange that we love about japanese games becomes diluted if not lost all together. On top of that so many games will look like they all have the same daddy, something we don't need to happen.

Get with the program Sammy, we like Sega's games just fine. Sure adjust you thinking to sell more game to us but don't loose focus of who you are, what you are about and what make Sega games great.

There's a lot Sega can update onto Rev (Panzer Dragoon series as well as many other forgotten gems like Motoraid etc) but we'd need some fresh stuff too. I'd like to see an update of Cyber Police Eswat, and after the success of Outrun 2 on Xbox perhaps we could see Super Hang On get a look in too (especially after the Shenmue tease). Last of all I think you really need to give us another long overdue Burning Rangers sequel. This series has serious potential just waiting (for too long) to be exploited again.

This isnice, a third party being fairly positive about the Revolution.
Probably Yuji Naka had a get-togheter with Shigsy (and some crack) and boom! mister Naka knows what the Revolution is and can't shut up about it inside Sega's walls.

Or is my imagination take a long run with me?
