Various new rumours regarding what Nintendo has planned for its next-generation of home console have surfaced, with sources across the globe misquoting or misunderstanding an interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata published in the Taipei Times. According to several news outlets, not least the usually more reliable Gamebiz, Iwata-san states that the Revolution console case is the controller for the device too. This, for want of a better word, is horseshit.
SPOnG is one of the only media outlets on the planet to have been given unrestricted access to Revolution hardware. We have picked it up, pushed its buttons and lifted its flaps. We even pulled out the (GameCube) power lead it was hooked up to. We got in some trouble for that. But what we're saying is the Revolution case as shown at E3 is not the controller. What it is is a hub. This hub will link wirelessly to small devices, probably each equipped with a screen, that will operate the less traditional software Nintendo has planned. They will also act as players for Nintendo's back catalogue. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that GameCube controllers can be plugged into Revolution.
It's not unusual to read rumours regarding Revolution. A new one crops up almost every single day. They are usually not as transparently wrong as this one though. Keep with SPOnG for all breaking Nintendo news on the run up to the final piece of the Revolution puzzle.
