New Lara Shows Return to Roots – First In-Game Legend Shots

Fit lass does Indiana Jones-type stuff. Perfect.

With Eidos shifting development of the Tomb Raider series across the pond to Crystal Dynamics, a new approach to the series was always on the cards. However, this new approach is actually an old approach, as Lara returns to her tomb raiding roots.

In news that reads more like a press release than perhaps it should, Ms Croft will stick to doing what she does best: stealing the ancient artefacts of downtrodden third world civilisations, and avoiding various death traps. And sticking her bum in the air. A lot.

There, now we’re back on style. Looking at the screens - captured from the CPU-killing Flash official site - the game really does look to have promise, and is bound be to one of Eidos’ biggest-selling titles of 2005, offering true mass market appeal.

Tomb Raider: Legend will be playable on this year’s showfloor during E3. Check SPOnG in the run-up to the show for some excellent exclusive bits and pieces next month.

Looks good but I'm tired of Lara. A totally new character would have been nice along with a name change.

Tomb Raider is a gaming relic itself now more than the relics featured in the games. We have new heroes, Leon in RE4, Sam in Splinter Cell and the Prince in PoP who all in comparison do their work much better. Lara even has that weird standing pose which looks lame. Familiarity can breed contempt.

If I want titilation I look elsewhere thanks and I find it near impossible to empathise with Lara's possible plight at all in order to keep me playing.

I'll try to withhold my judgement but I just think gaming has moved on a bit.

If they give the control-scheme an overhaul, i'll give it a chance. I absolutely hated the Tomb Raider control scheme. I played the original because it felt fresh, but by the time the sequel came out I'd had enough of it.

They need to take a leaf out of Capcom's book, and come up with something that alows a little more freedom.

I agree with you there Kid. Capcom kept evolving the RE series. Some of the changes were good and others were not. One thing that is good about RE is that you don't play the same character for every game.

With RE4 they rethought everything and the result is so different that even my brother who once hated RE series now has a go.

If CD could add more playable characters to TR and get rid of pre madonna Lara I might indulge. Seems doubtful though.

I wish Eidos would bring this game to Gamecube in addition to XB/PS2/PC.

As it is, I doubt it will be much good. It looks good, but I think it's going to be another case of style and hyper of substance.

Indeed such a version would be nice seeing as the closest we've had of TR was a GB and a GBA version. I'm sure sales would have done better on GC but maybe then possibly not because the last few games have been dump.

Eidos like EA are like actors being type cast only difference is that they want to stay in the role mold that made them rich instead of making new fresh games.

A TR spin off with new faces and story would have been a good answer instead of another date with Lara, because she's so damn sh*t hot apparently. B******s, she ain't nowt special and ain't real at all. She has zero personality and I hate her already.

The game sucked eight years ago and it still sucks to this day. I have admittedly tried to like it, but it's no Mario. He was far more smooth, acrobatic, and playable than the retard programmed Lara. The game is difficult because she can't move fluidly. Take a page from Prince of Persia. I mean the movies had her doing ridiculous jumps and slides, the game can certainly pull it off. It's not like they were ever shooting for realism, or even shooting at all. (tedious exploration coupled with horrible lo-rez textures makes not for a good game)

I don't think using the same character is the problem, we all (well, a lot of us) still look forward to the next proper Mario game. How long has he been around ?
As long as the game has some fresh gameplay ideas, gives us a new experience and a decent story, the same bird and the samey looking tombs don't bother me.

True but with the mario games even Nintendo have managed to produce spin off games starring other chaarcters featured in past Mario games.

For example both Wario and Yoshi feature in Mario Kart series but they also have their own games they spotlight such as Wario World, Made In Wario, Yoshi's Island and Touch! Yoshi.

Eidos failed to do this with TR the series suffered as a result. Yes, I know they aren't as big as Nintendo but I'm sure some progressional use of other TR characters may have helped them and stimulated sales.

Even Sega are managing this with Sonic and the Shining series.

Maybe that just shows the differences between east and west again. If you fail to take a risk not taking a risk becomes a risk itself.

So basically you're saying you want a Lara Croft: Krazy Karts starring such Eidos characters as Codename 47 (Hitman), Alex D (Deux Ex), and Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope (Backyard Wrestling) before the new Lara comes out so you can feel that Eidos is "keeping things fresh". Ya know alot of those Mario spin-offs are crap. If Nintendo just made Mario games, good ones I mean, I'd play and love every one. It's innovative gameplay that wins when referring to company mascots. Why do you think we all hate the Tomb Raider games? THEY ALL PLAY THE SAME, and they also all suck.
