The Japanese hardware and software sales charts for last week have been released, and make for interesting reading. PS2 unit sales are as always top of the charts, and Xbox languishes at the bottom with a mere handful sold – the Japanese really just don’t like it. Most interesting though, are the 'next-now-current-gen' handheld sales, with the DS outstripping the PSP by 10,000 units. This is not representative of the sales of the two consoles since launch however – they regularly swap places in the charts.
However the software sales show a more consistent trend - DS software routinely outsells games for the PSP. Would it be too fanboyish of us to suggest that this is because PSP owners are Flash Harry posers while DS buyers are ‘true’ gamers? Yes, without doubt. But perhaps it isn’t going too far to suggest that the difference is related to the more innovative games that are enabled by the DS, while the PSP offers nothing more in terms of gameplay but is likely to spend more of it’s time playing mp3s and videos. And with Sony likely to be making quite a loss on each unit sold, that’s likely to trouble them.
Top of the software charts is - predictably - Tekken 5, but its 174,000 units shifted are far fewer than the half million bullishly forecast by Namco. Is the long running franchise, historically very popular in Japan, finally running out of steam?
