Nintendo of Europe is the latest territory owner to enjoy a free run at the next-generation handheld market, enjoying monster sales as Sony continues to struggle to bring its PSP to market.
According to the firm, an impressive 500,000+ hardware units have been shipped since launch, news that builds on the
record-breaking launch success enjoyed by the DS.
And in spite of some surprisingly negative press, the platform’s lead title to date - Super Mario 64 DS - has remained a strong contender, with an attach rate of around 1:2 - not bad for a decade old, if seminal 3D platformer.
So as Europe basks in DS glory, what of Sony’s PSP? To date, the machine, which has been the subject of intense scrutiny, is yet to see a confirmed launch period. The multimedia-enabled portable PlayStation was slated to hit around now, though
recent comments from SCEE’s French office, along with a complete information and marketing blackout, sees most pundits plumping for a late summer arrival.
