The design of the DS has been something of a sticking point for Nintendo fans since the system was revealed in concept form in the sweating palm of Reggie Fils-Aime at last year’s E3.
Nintendo somewhat abandoned its traditional design aesthetic in favour of following a generic consumer electronics path. Although some heralded the move as proof that Nintendo was finally growing up, others took it as a desperate move, typical of the console’s rushed emergence.
When
SPOnG spoke to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last month about this exact issue, he said, “Hardware developers at Nintendo are always looking for what comes next and what will be the new direction as soon as they finish the design of any particular piece of hardware. Some of them are actually working on improved functionality of the existing machine, with some working on a rework of the exterior design exactly in the same way they did with the transition from Game Boy Advance to Game Boy Advance SP”.
Well, something for the naysayers was revealed by NCL recently, with the firm showing four new colours, namely black, white, blue and an adorable - if wildly camp - baby pink. Black and white iterations will be available in Japan on March 24, with blue and pink launching on April 21.
