Nintendogs Takes a Pokemon Twist

Three versions announced.

It has come to light that three versions of Nintendo’s Nintendogs AKA Puppy Times for DS will be made available in Japan, a surprise move for the kooky pet simulator.

In a move reminiscent of the Pokemon roll-outs at the turn of the millennium, Nintendo has decided to split the title into three games. Dachshund Edition, featuring Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Dachshunds, German Shepherds and Pugs; Chihuahua Edition, with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a Chihuahua, a Shih Tzu, a Labrador Retriever and a Beagle; and Sheba Edition contains a Shetland Sheepdog, a Miniature Pinscher, a Sheba, Welsh Corgie Puppies and Toy Poodles.

It was not made clear if Nintendo will release these smaller than expected cut-down versions outside of Japan, though SPOnG is somewhat split over whether it would be a good idea or not. We were expecting fifteen animals in a single full price game. However, fifteen dogs split into three mid-priced packages does have more bookcase chic potential.

I hope they come out with Pussy Times next. I like cats more than dogs. Maybe a 3 version release so that we get all the different kinds. Imagine playing with a kitten on the DS. It seems more fun than with a dog.

That is the dream. Hardly demographic-sound though... :-S

What I don't understand is WHY it's not going to be called Nintendogs outside Japan. It's so unique, that translating it to Puppy Times just seems silly.

Nintendogs needs no per-language name translation, since everyone in the world knows what DOG means, even if they can't speak English. Puppy Times, on the other hand, is more subject to being all-out ignored by the non-English speakers. Apart from sounding stupid in itself.

And the three-pack is just really stupid. I thought Nintendo would have gotten over that phase. Clearly not, though

Whatever happens I can see lots of females bagging Puppy Times after the whole tamogotchi egg thing. That's good because we want more females gaming just like males.

I could see Nintendo selling a DS and Puppy Times pack to plenty of females already. They all go weak at the knees for anything cute, very clever of Nintendo to pick up on this. Hope this changes the male dominance and makes developers think twice about what they develop.
