Take 2 has announced that it has acquired certain rights to Firaxis Games' massively popular Civilization series with the agreement of a long-term deal between the two companies. The first fruit of this venture will be the publication of Sid Meier's Civilization IV in late 2005. The game will appear under Take 2's new 2K Games banner, and you can expect the usual glut of expansions too, along with other as yet unspecified PC and console games.

"We are extremely pleased to be partnering with 2K Games on a new journey into the evolving world of Civilization," said Jeff Briggs, Founder, President and CEO of Firaxis Games. "2K Games' emergence as a publisher dedicated to producing high-quality, genre-defining games ensures that Civilization IV and Firaxis titles will continue to push the creative envelope and reach bigger audiences than ever before."

"In Civilization, we've created a world with endless possibilities that has been embraced by game players all over the globe," said Sid Meier, Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games. "With the upcoming addition of Civilization IV, our core fans and newcomers alike will enter a world of unparalleled scope and detail."

In-depth detail on Civilization IV is scant at the moment, but the game is touted as a big step forward for the series, with new 3D graphics, user modification features and single and multi-player content. We'll bring you the first images from Civ IV as soon as they become available.
