PS2 Shipments Jump to 80 Million
In spite of the PS2 shortages that hit the UK over the Christmas period, causing Sony to lose millions in hardware and software sales, the company has lifted its spirits, announcing that some 80 million consoles have now been shipped worldwide.

The company also made clear its intentions to dominate the market for yet another year, forecasting further shipments up to 5.8 million units before the end of March 2005. At present the total installed userbase of PS2 is expected to surpass that of the 100 million-selling PSone.

That is all.

There is no doubting Sony have done an excellent job since they enetered the console business. Their PR and 3rd party support have been second to none.

I have no need for one myself (one of very few it seems) as the far superior Cube and Xbox are more than enough for my gaming needs...

Evidence 1: GamesTM's 2003 year-end figures (issue 24, GTA San Andreas cover) placed Xbox and GC at 13.7 million and 13.94 million worldwide, respectively (PS2 at 70 million). However, it should be expected that Xbox has overtaken by now, as GC sales over Christmas (and indeed, most of the year) were dire. Gamesradar: "For the week-ending 11 December, just over 7000 Gamecubes were sold in the UK, compared to 37,500 for Xbox and 60,500 for PS2."

Evidence 2: Config posted these ChartTrack figures in an almost-typical week in September. They show the perecentage of total leisure software sold that week for each format.

38.6% PC (Sims2 power!)
37.7% PS2
12.7% Xbox
5.1% GBA
3.3% GC
2.5% PS1

Thus, while there may be a similar user base for both consoles, one format enjoys large volumes of software sales and the other doesn't. Unfortunately for Nintendo, we can see which doesn't.
