Outrun 2 Special Tours Images Make us Reconsider Breeding with Machines

The endless tech nightmare confused – such… beauty...

Posted by Staff
Sega’s AM2 team, under the money-burning scrutiny of the omnipotent Yu Suzuki, has released the final batch of images for Outrun 2 SP Special Tours, the update to the arcade smash hit.

A complete set of new courses, new cars is housed in Sega’s generic driving cabinet, augmented by a delightful Chihiro upgrade kit, complete with marquee stickers. And everything.

If we all fall asleep with 'downloadable content' written in our blood on a parchment of our skin, we cannot fail to see the wonderful new tracks appearing on Xbox via Live. Either that, or sell the proof of there being no God to the News of the World and port them ourselves.

Hmm. Doesn't look *that* spectacular to me.

You'd have to see it in motion to understand...

Looks can be deceiving. If it plays like the previous Xbox version it's worth checking out.

Have to hand it to Sega when it comes to adding extras to spice things up.

Well, I've seen and played "regular" Outrun2, and I was utterly whelmed. After Burnout3 I was expecting OR2 something a bit more special.

Don't compare Burnout and Outrun, both are different games.

Judge Outrun on it's merits not on Burnouts.

How so? Both involve driving through attractive locales at high speed - sideways into oncoming traffic a lot of the time. Speed and driving style are rewarded. There are side-games to play too.

Help me out here. What is the difference?

Having said that, BO3 does have the added interest of taking out the competition, and yourself, in a spectacular manner.

My point is, I don't see any merits, so it's fair to point at it and say "how's that any better than Burnout 3?"

So tell me (and all the other OR2 uninitiates) what is so ruddy great about OR2, and why it's so different from BO3?

Outrun 2 is more of a pure arcade racer then Burnout 3.
Burnout 2 is more of a pure arcade racer then Burnout 3.

"What?! Am I on crack?? Burnout 3 is SUPERB arcade racer!!!eleven!!! "

Yes that's right it 'is' an arcade racer but it isn't a PURE arcade racer.
Burnout 3, for me, had some serious bi polar issues that made me not like the game as much as everyoine else.
Outrun 2 is gorgeous you can really zone out and race and be completely immersed in the game, sliding around corners with a deeper sense of control.

Burnout 3 as opposed to Burnout 2, was not all about zone out racing.
Burnout 3 had somethings that completely take you out of the game/race and when you start to notice them it really stops you from enjoying what could haver been a brilliant pure arcade racer.

For one thing the unavoidable cars (cross traffic etc) that made it so that if you raced the one lap exactly the same way it would be almost completely random if you made it or not using the same lines.
Another thing is that if you crashed or nudged another race car you could dish out and recieve some serious damage but if you even farted next to a non racing car YOU would explode in a shower of sparks even if you just nudged them.
That inconsistancy really bugged me...I mean what's so special about the racing cars from the non race cars that made only YOU explode?
The f**king semtex paint?

These kinds of things really took you out of the race element of the game.
Yes Outrun 2 is slower but when you get to the later cars the velocity really does come near burnout speeds.
Also Outrun had style!
Your powersliding a f**king Ferrari!

Put simply:

Burnout, as a series, is about winning in as spectacular a way as possible.

Outrun, as a series, is about a journey. You go from A, to wherever you want. No laps, hardly masses of competition... just drive, and enjoy.

Or:

Burnout is aggression, Outrun is bliss.
