Canny PR or retail rush? PlayStation hardware shortages examined

Question: What is it that everyone wants?

PS2s, Oxford Street... get!
PS2s, Oxford Street... get!
Answer: What they can’t have. And this might just be the motivation behind Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s ‘stocking figures leak’ coinciding with Game Retail’s announcement that PlayStation 2 hardware might be tricky to get hold of this Christmas.

The retailer said, “We have been officially advised by Sony that the UK market will not receive any deliveries for the rest of November. We’ll be receiving stock during December and these will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis.”

Cripes!

Game continues, “As the UK's leading retailer of PlayStation 2 consoles, you can be assured that we will receive the best allocation. Register an interest now and we’ll let you know as soon as our PlayStation 2 packs are available!”

Phew, that’s okay then. Perhaps you should keep an eye out in your local Game store, the UK’s largest retailer, for PlayStation 2 hardware: the best-selling home console system that, seemingly, everyone wants.

I don't. :P

May be forced to get one though, if the new Shining Force (not Shining Tears) game is adamant to be exclusive to the console. Damn, being a SEGA fan is expensive. >_<

The only thing dumber than this marketing strategy is the fact that people will fall for it.

I was going to buy a PS2 last weekend as a bit of an impulse buy after wanting to get my hands on GTA: San Andreas. I'd been a big fan of the first two games (GTA and GTA2, not GTA3 and Vice City, since I never had a PS2) for some time and wanted to play the latest installment.

So I go around to Debenhams, because I had a money off voucher and surprise! They didn't have any left. So off I go to try someplace else... After I left the sixth shop in a row without a PS2 under my arm I just thought "f**k it. If Sony don't want to put any PS2s in stock this year just for that 'toy nobody could get' image then they can do without my custom."

I heard a lot of people talking about PS2s on my travels around Oxford :( I hope those people who can't get a PS2 because of the stupid hardware drought buy a competitors machine instead... hopefully after the initial dissapointment, their kids will come around and see that the sun doesn't rise over Sony's bum cheeks.

I played GTA: SA at work a few days later and decided I can do without it anyway.

The story behind the arcade shot? It was just this arcade sign in a bowling alley that I thought would make a cool wallpaper. Although it is weird standing on your tippy-toes with a camera in front of many a person wondering what the heck you're doing.
