SPOnG cannot really decide whether today’s news is shocking or totally predictable. Whatever, Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 4 will now be hitting PlayStation 2, reneging on its exclusivity agreement with Nintendo.
The game was the crowning jewel in Nintendo’s ever-thinning third-party crown and its loss will come as a savage blow to the console, which has seen a Dreamcast-esque withdrawal of support, despite the firm’s best courting efforts over the last 18 months.
And Capcom has been the biggest offender to date. Following botched talks looking at bringing both firms closer together which fell apart in late 2002, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7 both made the leap to PlayStation 2, with only the dire P.N.03 remaining with the ‘Cube. Capcom moved to underline its support for Nintendo’s home machine back in mid-January, stating that Biohazard 4/Resident Evil 4 would keep its exclusivity promise.
Clearly, this has since seen a tactical U-turn at Capcom: and the PS2 version will now follow its 'Cube cousin 8 months down the line.
Nintendo is no doubt reeling from this news. Resi 4 was the ‘Cube’s big hitter and to be stripped of its hardware-empowering title so late in the day is something of a credibility disaster. The firm now has only Namco exclusives to point to, with Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia still slated for GameCube only.
