How many PlayStation 2 hardware units have been sold?
Sony Computer Entertainment has released its updated sales figures for hardware on a global basis, revealing statistics as staggering as they are unsurprising.

According to the electronics giant, an incredible 74 million PlayStation 2's have been consumed - a figure trumped by sales of the two iterations of the original PlayStation hardware, now standing at 100 million.

And the PS2 figure is expected to be greatly swelled by sales of the recently launched slimline version which has been selling rather well across the globe. Indeed, Saturday afternoon in retail outlets the length and breadth of Britain, hoards of gamers of all ages could be seen scurrying home clutching a copy of San Andreas and a brand new console to play it on.

A global sales breakdown reads as follows:

Japan - 17,890,000 units
North America - 32,230,000 units
Europe - 25,880,000 units
Total - 74,000,000 units

Japan - 20,950,000 units
North America - units 40,190,000 units
Europe - 39,750,000 units
Total - 100,890,000 units

them's some crazy figures. is the only way down now, for Sony ??

out of interest, the new slim PS2 has been chipped already, it seems Sony didn't deem it necessary to modify the hardware enough to make it harder, or even impossible, to do.

Dude, "as staggering as they are unsurprising".

Sometimes, your news writing is as clever as it is dumb!

Full power dishonour!

Too right the PSTwo is flying off the shelves! On Saturday, Tyrion and I went to GameStation to buy one (each) and they had none left.

Now I've had time to reflect, and I'm not sure that I'm gonna buy one. My main reason for buying one was its greater quietness, and its inbuilt on-line capabilities. But I always have the sound on so loud I can't actually hear the PS2's jet-turbine volume fan, and a quick flick through the racks at GameStation revealed precisely two on-line capable titles that I'd like to buy, and I've finished both of them.

Plus apparently it's a total bitch to get working on-line. Can anyone comment on that?

It will be (and is), selling shedloads, but it was a real missed opportunity to add 2 more controller ports, rather than require yet another multi-tap. I'm sure only would have only made it slightly bigger than it currently is, but would have been well worth it, and made it a MUST buy for me.

Dude, hark at Mr. Popular.

If I had four controller ports, I'd be able to have three more controllers than I have friends.

Staggering fiqures indeed. I agree about the PSTwo being a missed oportunity from Sony but as usual they will milk the customer to death.

The number is loads, more than I can count. Problem is that because of the Action Replay and Freeloader stuff PS2 no longer really needs to be chipped.

Another thing many don't know is that long before this new PS2 came out, there were mod cases for the Ps2 that are top loaders just like this new PStwo. These cases let you bypass the PS2 import functions or something. As a result many of the hardcore invested in them. Action Replay etc can do this stuff with ease now though.
