Koei announces PS3 title - Oni details inside!
Koei has today revealed a rather interesting PS3 project by the name of Oni (working title). Unlike the 2001 Bungie developed game of the same name, this is based on a film project that is being developed alongside it. Oni is based on a screenplay created by the late Akira Kurosawa, best known for his films set in historical Japan.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, considering Kurosawa’s earlier works, the film and game will involve samurai, and frankly, that’s more than enough to snare our attention. The synopsis reads as follows: “Amidst the conflict of the warring Period, 16th Century Japan, a blonde haired samurai warrior must discover his own destiny. Themes transcend to other Akira Kurosawa works, such as Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress.”

The PS3 title will coincide with the film’s release, in 2006: hopefully we’ll have more details before then. Either way, for those with a penchant for Japanese history, there’s plenty in the works for this generation – not least Sony’s own Genki and, of course, Koei’s Kessen III, which is due for release this December.

Having this kind of stuff is good from a historic perspective (especially if you are teaching about games and culture in a school), and hopefully gameplay wise too.

Hope Koei get some more success out of this game. PS3 seems so close and yet so far.

So how is this any different than any of the other hundreds of hack and slash games released yearly ? Japanese culture I love, rehashing the same stories from not much different perspectives is what is killing Japanese Gaming economy. All their original work is so skewered to the Japanese only market that they cant sell overseas. sorry dont care who makes it, with a description like that it will be average, but more likely below average game with better graphics.

Um, I don't know... but apart from the fact that's it's set in historical Japan, how is this similar to any hack and slash games?

It might be an RPG, or a samurai dating sim or something...

Although TBH, it could well be a hack and slash - in which case the only thing that makes it different is the fact it will be one of the first ones on PS3... probably.
