Sony reveals first PSTwo value bundle

Japan gets PS2 Racing Pack: revamped console + GT4

Posted by Staff
Sony has today announced the Playstation 2 Racing Pack for Japan. Somewhat predictably, it’s called that because it comes bundled with a copy of the hugely anticipated Gran Turismo 4. Many had suspected a package like this would be forthcoming when information on the PSTwo was first revealed; but since GT4 has dropped its online features, it’s slightly more surprising.

One of the key features of the revamped PSTwo, quite apart from its diminutive stature, is the incorporated network adapter. Some had thought that the first PSTwo bundles, particularly in Japan, would play up to that online functionality. But without any sufficiently major online titles, GT4 seems to have been the prime contender.

The Racing Pack will go on sale on December 3rd, retailing for around 25,000 Yen (just over £125). There’s no information on plans for a European or US version, but if anything changes, as ever – read it here first. And in the meantime, have a look at these lovely pictures of some boxes.

An excuse for Sony to sell PS2 at that price tag til PS3 hits the shelves. As sweet as it looks and most likely is, it's so late in the PS2s life for this. It might stimulate some growth in sales yet, but will they really go for it in japan or will this end up like the PSX thingy?

PS2 is dead. I'm not sure why the smaller version is selling so well. It is the exact same hardware people. Unless you travel a lot, wtf is the point. It sits there and it plays your games. I haven't moved my bigass PS2 in over 4 months.

My PS2 is on its last legs and, if it does decide to expire, I'll certianly be buying one of these to tide my over 'til the next gen arrived.

Come to think of it, the office PS2 has just expired...

I would be inclined to agree but for one minor, itty bitty thing - PSOne.

It arrived at the same time as PS2, and clearly sold well enough for Sony to consider repackaging the PS2.

And lets face it, Sony hasn't made it smaller for the sake of portability. It's just the result of technological advances - cramming multiple chips on the one wafer - and the PSU being thrown out of the box.

I agree confiq. Plus there are also the guys out there who will sell there PS2's just to rebuy this thing. If there is also a price drop a bit down the line then alot of folk who dont own a PS2 at present will snap one up with a few key titles before the arrival of the PS3.

Its a nice looking system i reckon.

Built in ethernet, half the size, same price.
I'm trading in my 4 month old ps2 at Game to knock the
price down a bit on this new slinky PSTwo.

The size and built in ethernet dont count for much in my opinion. Its a nice looking system but with the PSP and DS around the corner i think there are wiser and more exciting ways to invest your money.

Hmmm

True we do have a lot to look forward to in the next few months, especially if one were to consider splashing out on both the DS AND the PSP.

I'm still going to go ahead and swop in my PS2 for a PSTwo, the cost of buying an ethernet adapter for the PS2 makes up half the difference between what I'll get for trading in my PS2 and the cost of a new PSTwo.

So for £20 layout I get a sexy new PSTwo, seeing as I was enormously chuffed with myself when I changed from PS1 to PSOne a few years back, I don't think I'll be dissapointed.

The new skinny PSTwo will now leave enough space under the telly for an xbox, have been thinking of getting a crystal edition now that the price has dropped. Now all I need is the bloody time to play the growing pile of 'must-own' titles in my collection.

If you buy the Xbox before changing your PS2, you will probably find you will save even more money. You will lose interest in PS2 altogether.
