Firaxis CEO, Jeff Briggs, has recently confirmed that Civilisation IV for PC is in the works. It’s hardly unprecedented or surprising, but it’s good news nonetheless. Between the 3 previous instalments and their respective expansion packs, we have devoted a fair few hours, nay years, to this noble pursuit.
No further details have been offered up, but it would be reasonable to expect that the series will continue in the tradition of becoming even more complicated with each revision. Potentially, that will make Civilisation IV extremely complicated.
Perhaps the most interesting revelation is that Firaxis is warming to the idea of developing for consoles. The Civ series had always been intended for the PC market, with the exception of PSOne Civilisation 2 - which left rather an underwhelming impression, and it will be interesting to see if, and how, Civilisation IV might establish itself on PS2 or Xbox; or indeed the next generation of consoles.
In other Firaxis news, the team will also be working on a new Pirates game (Pirates 2, in case you were wondering) and another two titles besides. Whether one of these will be console specific remains to be seen. Mr. Briggs has promised more information in the new year, so expect an update then.
