Australia is rubbish: Proof inside
In somewhat startling news, it has emerged that the freshened up Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude has been refused classification by the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification, meaning that game cannot legally go on sale in the country.

The AOFL cites “…obscured and/or implied sexual activity and obscured and partial nudity involving stylised, animated characters…” as the reasoning behind its decision. Well, duh! SPOnG was under the impression that that is the whole point of the game.

Oh well. SPOnG will now join Australia’s gaming public in hoping that all members of AOFL don’t get bitten by anything nasty. Like a saltwater crocodile. Or a redback. Or anything.

Not that I agree with the decision, but the OFLC (their "official" abbreviation, not the AOFL) has also given the game an RC classification simply because "sex is a prize".

Offering sex as a prize is not acceptable in gaming (in the OFLC's eyes); GTAIII had to have the hookers removed because you could pay for their services then steal your money back.

It seems that Australia is becoming less and less liberal in regards to video games. What we really need is a "R" or "NVE" (non violent erotica) classification for gaming; but the government just refuses to allow any games considered "R" rated to be sold.

According to the OFLC website, Australia's rating will be changing early next year; the impression I got was that there will be R and X ratings for games added.

Who cares???

Austrailia is not blessed with the smartest of citizens...(or should I say denizens as it wasn't originally their continent).

If their tiny little fragile minds might be tipped over the edge by sexual content - even though it's fictional - can you imagine a continent of travelling head cases...

Stay at home with your sanctioned products, and do as the man says.

Hate to lay it on you "brain", but there are very few Western continents that are inhabited by their "owners". US? Nope. Japan? Nope. UK? Nope.

Some parts of Australia are very forward thinking (some states have government-funded incentives for game developers, for instance); unfortunately, the federal government is currently listening too much to "family" oriented groups and right-wing Christian groups. Basically, there are too many "fogies" in power and since our recent federal election put them back into power, there's not much one can do about it.

Hopefully 2005's new classification system will improve things.

WTF? Unless you are talking about the original "owners" of the UK being protozoa and/or dinosaurs, we're still here. The French, Romans and Norwegians may have added their genes into the mix, and a few miserable celts may have moved north/west, but the original inhabitants of the UK are still here.

Plus US, Japan and the UK are not continents.

"Brain",

If you're going to bother attempting to denigrate my country, please learn to spell it's name properly (Australia) and also acknowledge that it is a country and not a continent.

That way you won't just look like an idiot.

Jeez, make your minds up.

You guys are always going on about how you are the only Country that is also a Continent, and (also) an Island.

I never said it was a continent. Some of us have heard of New Zealand you know! Not one island either - it's a lot of them.

Dude, you're a f**king idiot!

I was on your side at first!

No one said that YOU said it was a continent - that was the entire point. Australia IS a continent, but you don't seem to realise it - lust look at any one of a million definitions of continent:

Dictionary.com

Chambers

Freedictionary

ETYMOLOGY: 16c: from Latin, representing the phrase terra continens continuous land.

Now what the f*ck does New Zealand have to do with Australia and "continuous land".

What "continent" do you think you are from?

"Australasia" is a construct conceived to make New Zealand and a million insignificant islands feel good about themselves. But the main defining characteristic of a continent is that it is a contiguous piece of land.

1. Learn to quote.
2. Approximately 50% of Australians are female.

But it's interesting that YOU thought about homosexulity first. A bit of a Freudian slip, ne c'est pas?

It's a big shame for gaming aussies. The old foggies in their government again don't understand gaming and see it only as a child only pursuit. And the poor beggars can't even import LSL either, that I think is a little harsh especially in todays global village of the net.

I can't wait to see what they do with GTA: SA.

I find it amazing that they are reacting this way when games with killing are more of a threat supposedly. Even more so when prostitution is legal their too, and they can't play LSL which is a fictional game.

Too PC if you ask me, stupid drongos.
