GTA-Powered PSTwo set for Halo 2 party poop?

Speculation points to cut-down console later this year

According to speculation emanating from the godly heights of some analyst somewhere, (P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research for those interested), the fabled cut down version of the PlayStation 2 is likely to hit later this year.

And what’s more, Sony is likely to launch the machine alongside Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, for no other reason than to spoil the release party surrounding Bungie’s Xbox exclusive killer app Halo 2.

McNealy also pointed out that “…Sony has not commented publicly about the device, but it has already applied for the copyright of PStwo.” Um, quite…

If and when the PSTwo ever does emerge from the fog of rumour, blinking into the light of truth and reality, we’ll let you know. And show you some pictures of it too – we’re nice like that.

Isn't it a bit late to be pushing PStwo out of the door? Once PSP get here no one will really be interested, especially with other newer consoles on the horizon.

Had Sony launched a cut price PStwo a year ago it would have been worthwhile, but now it looks desperate to succeed where PSX failed.

Also had they not been so greedy by keeping the price higher than the sky for so long, they might have also cleaned up more cash. PStwo should prove interesting all the same.

Bah, who cares? It's very unlikely to spoil Halo 2's launch (after all, who DOESN'T own a PS2 who actually WANTS ONE?), and it'll be competing with their OWN product. So feh.

Looks to me like a desperate move because of yet another weak line up compared to Xbox this year. With GT4 in doubt (again) of slipping to next year, Metal Gear Solid also following...Sony's line up isn't as impressive as it looked a few months ago. San Andreas being the main one which will contend with Xboxes big guns...but other than that? Killzone to me, looks set to disapoint in a few areas, even though it will most likely be a solid game. But other than them two I really can't think of any truely AAA exclusive games coming to PS2 this year.

This won't effect the sales of Halo 2 whatsoever...with San Andreas coming out before Halo 2 anyway and people will much rather buy the most anticipated game of the year than a console they probably already own, but in a smaller package with a game they can buy cheaper on its own.

Desperate marketing by Sony...nice to see them getting a little jittery 2 months before Halo 2 rocks the world...don't blame them really...never seen a game so hyped.

It depends how one defines "spoil".

This is hardly going to make all Xbox owners think "sod Halo 2, this PSTwo is just great"
GTA:SA bundled with a new formfactor PS2 does, however, have the potential to catch the attention of people who were thinking of buying a new Xbox just for Halo2.

GTA has gained more mainstream media attention than Halo. A new GTA is bound to get plenty of coverage.

It's a moot point at this stage. It's no accident there's an "anal" in analyst. :)

What a spectacular display of blinkered fanboyism and ignorance! I'm guessing you said the same about the PlayStation, right? Sony haven't shifted a single PS1 because, after all, everyone who wanted a PlayStation already had one!

I already have a PS2, and I'm interested. My PS2 is getting on a bit, and a smaller, sleeker footprint is very enticing.

I' guessing you're refering to the PSP, right? Different market, dude. Folks in the market to buy a console do not equal folks in the market to by a PSP.

I think this is a very good move by Sony. The PS2 sells on name alone. It does not sell on merit any longer. Perhaps it did a couple of years back but it is now outdated. It is the Playstation name that sells. Especially near Xmas when most consoles are bought by people who know nothing whatsoever about them. The PS2 /PSTwo will outsell the Xbox this year - even though the Xbox is better in every respect. Sony must be commended for bringing console gaming to the mainstream and everyone owes them a debt for this. But, just as we all replaced our Master Systems with Mega Drives then with Playstations gamers who require the best will ( or already have) upgrade to the best console. At his time, the Xbox is far superior to any other console. But still PS2 will sell more. The argument about San Andreas does not count because it will be out on Xbox early next year. The next year will be very interesting because as Microsoft have gained so much ground, Sony may have left the PS3 a little too late to guarantee they will have the number one selling console as PS2 is ( and PSX before that.)

there is no gta for xbox. rockstar said this already.. the only other version they spoke of is the pc version..

and the PSTwo makes sense from sonys point of view because it would be cheaper to make therfore making them more money.

it will reignite interest in the ps2 and sell a couple million more.. whether the xbox fan boys like it or not. I keep hearing these peeps talking about there are no aaa titles for ps2.. wish they would take their head out of trhe h2 cloud. its sad their defence.

LOL, Sony will have to give PStwo's away with GTA to spoil the release of HALO2!

Well, all bets were GTA3/VC wouldn't hit XBox. After the huge sales, i doubt they'd ignore the market they opened.

As for the PS2 - i've owned all 3 consoles, and i sold my GC and PS2 earlier this year. Simply put, the only games i had to look forwards to on them were Killzone (which is now being shown as nowhere near as good as it was being made out), a new Zelda (at which point i will re-buy the Cube), and nothing else that had really caught my attention. No, i'm not interested in GTA:SA; GTA3 got to the point where i played it just to whack random people, and i can do that with Covenant scum anytime on the Box.

And, back to the original point: they PStwo will, like it's predecessor, sell to a minority of people; those caught out by the "built to break" PS2 (God i love that quote) breaking down on them, and those few people without one who actually care they don't have it.

It will be interesting, however, to see what they do with it; after all, can a smaller unit still house the HDD? Where will the Network adaptor attach? Will it still have movie playback?

I am sorry to dissapoint you, but Rockstar have not denied that San Andreas will come out on Xbox, they just have not confirmed it. Just the same as they did not confirm Vice City until the last minute. And just as EA did not confirm that they would support Xbox Live. Its because Sony made them sign an agreement that stopped them talking about other versions before a specific date. To maximise sales, Sony will most likely have made the date before which San Andreas cannot be mentioned December 31st. This makes good business sense. Oh, by the way, this also applies to Pro Evo Soccer which is online only on Xbox. Only just confirmed, but as with all the others above, most people were almost sure weeks or even months ago. As for myself being an xbox 'fanboy', I have a PS2,Playstation,N64,PC,GBA,
Megadrive,Master system & 3DO. Of course I use my PC, but seldom for games any more. All the above consoles (even the 3DO) were the best in their day and I still play on all of them from time to time. The fact is that at the present time the Xbox is the best. Last year it was the best console with the second best games line up, this year it is best on both counts. I like Sony, they made a brilliant console in PS2. But Xbox is far superior. It was made 2 years later it would be hard for it not to be. I will stick with Xbox... until something better comes along !!

Of course it won't. Anyone with an Xbox will buy Halo 2. Lets face it, they've waited long enough for a decent game.

I agree, Halo 2 has been hyped beyond belief.
But it's hardly likely to rock the world, now is it? It'll just rock that very small portion of the world that own an Xbox.

not quite true, I reckon Halo2 will sell a LOT of XBOXes, not least to fans of HALO who discovered it thru the PC.
There's always one game that usually pushes people, who are not sure about buying a particular console, over the edge.

I totally agree. I can see alot of people tempted by Halo2 and the lower XBox price. Just as i imagine Resident Evil 4 will ship a serious amounts of Gamecubes to people who were never really interested in the console.
