It has been revealed today, via the Star Trek Online Universe website, that Perpetual Entertainment will be developing and publishing a Star Trek MMORPG due for release in early 2007. There’s a definite cross-over between Trekkies and statistic-obsessed online RP gamers: so Perpetual will be looking to cash-in fully on the devotion of the most cultish followers. If fans are willing to dress up in heavyweight rubber costumes and then travel half way across the world in order to sup Kia-Ora in the company of fellow convention-goers who insist on talking in a pretend alien language, then surely they’d be willing to shell out for a small online subscription and a spot of MMORPG’ing.
The license will extend to all the Star Trek movies and TV series, so as Joe Keene (CEO of Perpetual) says, “The scope of the content license is extraordinary for a game of this kind, giving us the opportunity to immerse fans and players in the incredibly rich, diverse and exciting universe of Star Trek.” And we believe him.
Despite the fact that other MMORPGS have recently been falling out of production left, right and centre, the Star Trek take ought to make it through. Like The Matrix, Final Fantasy and Warcraft, it’s blessed with a big enough name to deserve a reasonable level of attention.
If any more must-know details come to light, we’ll beam them up, Scotty etc.
