New MMORPG to Venture Forth - Stamped with The Star Trek License
It has been revealed today, via the Star Trek Online Universe website, that Perpetual Entertainment will be developing and publishing a Star Trek MMORPG due for release in early 2007. There’s a definite cross-over between Trekkies and statistic-obsessed online RP gamers: so Perpetual will be looking to cash-in fully on the devotion of the most cultish followers. If fans are willing to dress up in heavyweight rubber costumes and then travel half way across the world in order to sup Kia-Ora in the company of fellow convention-goers who insist on talking in a pretend alien language, then surely they’d be willing to shell out for a small online subscription and a spot of MMORPG’ing.

The license will extend to all the Star Trek movies and TV series, so as Joe Keene (CEO of Perpetual) says, “The scope of the content license is extraordinary for a game of this kind, giving us the opportunity to immerse fans and players in the incredibly rich, diverse and exciting universe of Star Trek.” And we believe him.

Despite the fact that other MMORPGS have recently been falling out of production left, right and centre, the Star Trek take ought to make it through. Like The Matrix, Final Fantasy and Warcraft, it’s blessed with a big enough name to deserve a reasonable level of attention.

If any more must-know details come to light, we’ll beam them up, Scotty etc.

I suppose a ST online rpg could work, but I would much rather see something like Star Gate, where the approach is very modern warfare against alien weapons.

Star Trek can be a little to pc for it's own good, but if the fans are there to support it, then there I see no reason why it's should fail. It's also easier to have an established universe most know and can just enter, learn and play. ST fans are just as likely to keep the game running as Star Wars fans. Good luck to them.

Excellent. As a long time Trekkie I'm happy they are making a Star Trek MMORPG. Exspecially as I'm a MMORPG fan as well and enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies. Can't wait to see how they do it and what time line they start it in (Star Trek Original (hope not!) Star Trek: Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or perhaps on the movies or Enterprise) ether way I'm intrigued and getting a bit impatient to see a good Star Trek game. Perhaps this is the one I've been waiting for. Lets hope it suceeds!

Last good ST game I played was Elite Force on LAN. Was a bloody good laugh I can tell ya.

These big license games could be the thing,, to attract new people to gaming, they might have overlooked before.
