UPDATED: Pro Evolution Soccer 4 Goes Live! Online Multiplayer Dream Lives

Konami's supreme soccer series Live on Xbox

Posted by Staff
If the prospect of the newly-revealed Championship Manager Online isn't sufficient to satisfy cravings for multiplayer football frolics, then the latest update from the Konami camp will satisfy even the most voracious of sporting appetites. Exciting news filtering back from EGN has uncovered the joyous revelation that Pro Evolution Soccer 4 for the Xbox will be Live enabled. Although this is what everyone wanted, it had been thought that PES 4 would be a strictly offline affair. At this stage it hasn’t been confirmed as to what the capacity of Live features will be: although an official announcement is expected in the near future.

If this is fully fledged online multiplayer competitive play, there will be plenty of ecstatic, near-delirious gamers. If it isn’t, then expect a crushing tsunami of disappointment to soggy these just-heightened expectations. Xbox Live compatibility could technically allude to any number of things: downloadable content, uploadable championship results and so on. We certainly don’t want to count the proverbial chickens quite yet.

Bearing in mind that the Japanese version, Winning Eleven 8, doesn’t feature online play, this has certainly come as a surprise. So as soon as we get the full lowdown, expect an update immediately.

UPDATE:

We have just received word that, yes, this is it. Pro Evolution Soccer 4 will boast full, real-time online play! The maximum number of players has yet to be confirmed, but that will surely be detailed in the official announcement that should follow shortly.

Let the joy be unconfined!

This is great news, and I'm glad to see Konami listen to their customers needs. Xbox folk will be doing somersaults with much glee.

Amazing news! This is exactly what I've been hoping for. I do feel for the only PS2 owning fans of the series...but thats there problem. Nice one Konami, you are now my favourite Developer! Roll on October (or November whenever its out)

BTW I wonder what effect this will have on Xbox sales in Japan? If its released over their. After Winning Eleven 8 selling a million copies on its week of release...makes you wonder what an Online version would sell over their, even if its on Xbox. Could out sell Ninja Gaiden at least.

ALL HAIL KONAMI!

that stuff about Japan...

It does make you wonder. Imagine an Xbox Xmas bundle in Japan, WE11 8 Online + Ninja Gaiden... That would have to convince a fair few...

how come its only online on xbox? all pro evo games have been exclusive to ps2 up untill now ( i think) , wouldn't it make more sense to make pro evo online on ps2 and xbox?

It's only online for the Xbox cos I asume the PS2 couldn't cope with it! It's an insult to loyal PES fans such as myself, who have always backed it and never gone down the FIFA route! Guess I'll be buying an Xbox then! Bye Sony!

im not sure why it's online only on xbox as i think the ps2 would have coped with it (eg this is football was online) this is obviously some sort of stint to make you buy an xbox. i personnaly don't think it's worth it ... i mean why buy a console just because a game is online on one console... i personnaly think its worth the money.

Great news indeed! The only thing to worry about the Xbox version is how well translated to the Xbox controller the gameplay will be.

If online multiplayer is indeed confirmed for the Xbox, I really see no reason why Konami wouldn't offer such service for the Euro/North American PS2 versions as well.

If there's no PS2 online version, it'll sure be a tough choice for multiplatform owners.

Perhaps because Xbox Live is very different server wise compared to Sony online. Sony servers allow the developer to use and run their own servers as freely as they want. This means not Subcription fee but it means Developers who haven't really developed an online game will struggle. Just look at Capcom and Resident Evil Outbreak. They couldn't get it online for Europe. And the state of EA servers when they begun using them.

On the flip side, creating servers for Xbox Live is simpler. You can use your own servers if you want, but under a certain amount of control from Microsoft. Which some may find a problem, but when your new to online development, having the best company at all things Internet at hand definatly isn't a bad thing. Which may be why Konami could get PES4 online on Xbox Live thanks to Microsofts great online service. Or more likely, Microsoft gave them a substancial amount of money for it.

The Austria versus England game has just started. The Austria team includes Sick, Haas and Ivanschitz! Phil Neville is on the bench for England.
