As we exclusively revealed exactly a week ago today, Midway has begun work on the next instalment of the ‘Rush’ series, to be called L.A. Rush. In case you were wondering, that’s its name because it’s set in Los Angeles. Now that information has been officially confirmed, and Midway has outlined the proposed contents of the game.
Unlike the previous San Francisco Rush titles, LA Rush will be more than just a straight-up arcade racer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it has opted for a more ‘explorative’ (i.e. GTA 'inspired') approach, with an array of missions that deviate from simple racing. The other new trend for racing titles – being the whole ‘Underground’ car customisation jiggery-pokery thing, has also been included, with Rides Magazine and West Coast Customs helping to authentically style the game’s design.
It’s being planned for release on Xbox and PS2 in spring of 2005, although it may find itself facing some stiff competition. Los Angeles is a popular geographical influence for this type of game, as True Crime and San Andreas go to show. And as far as racing games are concerned these extra flourishes in gameplay, as welcome as they are, are rapidly becoming the norm. Still, we were quite keen on the original Rush titles, so we shall keep our fingers crossed for a positive outcome.
