Xbox Doom 3 to be Pushed Back Until 2005?

Hollenshead outlines iD's next moves.

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of iD software, has made the implication that the Xbox version of Doom 3 could be subject to some delay, according to an interview with CNN Money. Publisher Activision and Vicarous Visions (which is handling the console port) have understandably been pushing for a 2004 release, but according to Hollenshead, “It’s still up in the air…”

Emphasising the importance of perfectly balanced gameplay, Hollenshead went on to explain that it might be impossible to get the Xbox version of Doom 3 out before 2005, as iD is plainly unwilling to sacrifice the quality of its product. It would be a shame for console fans if the wait was prolonged further, but then a substandard port would simply be unacceptable, especially as many potential buyers will have already sampled the title on PC by the time of any Xbox release.

Details on iD’s next project are still scant, however. It’s most likely to be a FPS and it is an entirely new franchise, but other than that, the only clues are that the new title won’t be too much of a departure from iD’s trademark style. Hollenshead again: “Our roots are in the horror action genre. That suits our tastes and talents. We’re thinking about something up that alley…”

A sequel to Return To Castle Wolfenstein is also in the works, most likely based on the Doom 3 engine, although there is no timeline for this project as yet. As soon as any fresh FPS news arrives from ID, as usual, you can read it here first.

How can they sacrifice what isn't there? It's an over glorified Tech demo.

They should start worrying about now. After having Doom 3 already doing te rounds on FSNs, an Xbox delay won't help people wait for the final product.

This is going pear shaped for iD, though I hate to say so.
