Various reports from retailers and sources from the Ziff Davis Electronic Gaming Summit are currently indicating specific release dates for the Nintendo DS. Nintendo has not confirmed these and is sticking to its original "by the end of 2004" time frame. However, as these dates fall before the end of 2004 and plenty in time for Christmas, they do seem perfectly plausible. In all probability these are fair estimates, give or take a week or two.
As is stands, widespread belief is that Japan gets the DS on November 4th and America gets it a week later, on November 11th. Various third party publishers have claimed that they are confident this should be the case. However, with so few games confirmed for a November release, there are legitimate concerns that the console’s launch-day software library could be slightly lacklustre, and that could prompt Nintendo to push it back slightly.
As for the European launch, Nintendo is still uttering an early 2005 release. On the other side of the world, fellow PAL-mongers in Australia are being told by retailers that the DS will arrive by early March and will cost $AUS 199.99 (which works out at less than £80). Once again, this is unconfirmed by Nintendo and is therefore entirely subject to change.
