McGee announces "goriest game ever made" at peak of "games are evil" debate

George Romero working on City of the Dead for PC and console.

When Activision cancelled Dead Rush a couple of weeks ago, it was disappointing news. Shooting zombies is one of those purist elements of videogaming that will always maintain a solid appeal. That’s why news of City of the Dead, allegedly “the goriest game ever made” seems like such a good thing. However, given the recent Manhunt controversy, many would argue that this strapline is nothing to be proud of.

In development with American McGee’s The Mauritian Import-Export Company and Asylum Entertainment, City of the Dead’s scripting, story and environments are to be handled by George Romero. For fans of horror flicks and zombie B-movies, Romero is as important as Jesus, having cursed the world with delicious cellular nonsense like Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead. Hence on paper, this game does seem like a top-notch idea.

Asylum has acquired the rights to bring an entire trilogy based on City of the Dead to PC and console, so it could well be a familiar name in the future. Indeed, in McGee’s and Romero’s plight to find a publisher, their product overview specifically cites the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series as the titles to beat. To compete with these long-standing Capcom and Konami franchises, the COTD team will definitely have to pull all the stops out... presumably spewing all manner of guts and gore in the process.

Expect more City of the Dead news as soon as a publisher has been confirmed.

This sounds good to me, and will most likely be an ADULT GAME. I was looking forward to Dead Rush so it's nice to have a cool alternative.

It would be silly if this currrent violent game thing started targeting other games because it would just increase sales of them, and make someone else richer. Yes maybe Manhunt, but Silent Hill and Resident Evil are another sort of violence altogether. Manhunt is violence more or less for the sake of it. SH and RE are violent as a means of the main characters survival against impossible looking odds. Even GTA has a storyline to back and base it's violent content (the extras are there to give the player freedom).

I'll look forward to this game if Romero is onboard especially, since he deserves a little success after leaving the RE movie project.

This looks fantastic. Killing zombies is indeed more fun than pie, and of course the Romero involvement is excellent news. I'll be keeping an eye on how this develops...
