Doom III: Can You Play it?

Or will you have to shop for Jesus?

Posted by Staff
CEO of id Software Todd Hollenshead is at it again, this time detailing the minimum specifications that your PC will have to meet in order to fully enjoy Doom III.

According to id, you’ll need a 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500 or better. You’ll need 384 megabytes of free memory, as well as two gigabytes of hard drive space. It recommends four GB if your system is running low. You will also require an nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

Which, to be fair, isn’t too bad, and perhaps reflects the fact that development of Doom III started with the advent of the steam engine. Look for much, much more on Doom III from both QuakeCon and Activate in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned...

This game would blow my crap pc up by just installing. No surprise there.

D3 looks cool but only way I'll be playing it is on my mates Xbox. Better that than nothing.

I'm surprised at how "mild" the min spec is. But then, given that the game was started when I was in short pants, it was probably an uber computer back then.

Of course, the "optimum" spec still requires you to run it on "Deep Thought", but our office boxes should be able to handle it nicely ;-)

The Xbox is a LONG way below min-spec though...

Speaking as a developer.. you'd actually be suprised by how wrong that statement is.

Please explain... I was going purely on a 733PIII being a half the min processor speed. And 64Mb RAM being a LOT less than the 384 in the min spec. And the 8Mb Memory card not having all that much room for those lush textures. It's far enough below min spec, of course, the fact that it runs a low resolution will even things up a bit... but the Xbox version ain't gonna rock like the PC version does (regardless of how much rocking it does/n't).

Well....yes I can.

I've just been playing it for the last two hours and I can honestly say that I swore with glee more than once.
It plays quite a few new tricks that are going to put a smile on most serious gamers lips. I don't want to ruin the suprise, but when the game first starts and you are given a well presented video intro most PC users find themselves thinking...ok, so what are the REAL graphics gonna look like? And then...you find out. Trust me! The way you find out, rocks.

As for my system specs, I'm running a 2.0 Ghz Athlon with 1 Gig of RAM with a GF FX 5600. No ultra here so I was running in 640x480, but old Carmack was right. It doesn't really matter about resolution. It's the textures baby. Once you stick a bit of antialiasing on, you won't care.

TBH, there has been a bit of VERY chuggy slowdown when the action gets intense, but I am running in medium detail.

At last, a game that makes me want to get a new graphics card.....again.

And as for the "Where did I get it?" questions, well...I'm not telling. :)
