Following confirmation that Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay - the much applauded Xbox title from Starbreeze Studios - is being ported to PC, and with a separate sequel possibly in the works, comes news that the PS2 will also enjoy a version of the bloodthirsty prison escape adventure. Although Vivendi Universal has denied all knowledge of such a project, this revelation comes from Riddick himself, so it simply cannot be ignored.
According to Vin Diesel, he is pushing hard for the PS2 version to be ready by Christmas so that it coincides with the release of the DVD of the film. The unfeasibly deep-voiced actor is obviously a pro-active individual, keen to boost his own royalty payments. Bearing in mind sales of the DVD could otherwise be a bit sluggish - due to the fact it’s apparently quite a poor film - a PS2 release might help make the franchise more popular before it flops straight into the bargain bins.
Many of those who have played the US Xbox version of Chronicles of Riddick are already heralding it as game of the year, and its quality is difficult to dispute. A PlayStation 2 version would almost certainly prove popular and profitable, so it would be peculiar if VU lets this opportunity pass it by. However, if work on the PS2 version has not already begun, it could be a struggle to release the game before next year.
As soon as we get the official word from VU Games, we’ll let you know.
