US Gets GBA Movies as Europe Sees Christmas Pledge
The long-awaited Game Boy Advance movies have shipped Stateside this week, with episodes of the Pokemon TV series hitting retail just shy of $20.

The episodes are split across two releases, with Playing with Fire! and Johto Photo Finish on Pak One and A Hot Water Bottle and For Ho-Oh The Bells Toll on Pak 2. There are around 40 minutes of playtime on each.

Nintendo announced at E3 that it was planning on making a significant investment into the video playback of its portable offerings, following the company having its arm twisted by a swelling unofficial GBA video scene.

Nintendo also confirmed to SPOnG at E3 that third-party video negotiations with various companies outside of the games industry are at an advanced stage.

Speaking to us today, a Nintendo Europe spokesman commented, "...we are currently planning to release various Game Boy Advance video titles into Europe by Christmas of this year". However, Nintendo refused to comment as to what the launch line-up may contain. It’s also worth noting that the emphasis on "...planning to release..." indicates to SPOnG that the rollout is far from the top of NOE’s yuletide priority list.

Expect updates throughout the rest of this year.

I don't watch Pokemon either, but I'm sure that this will help sell these players to a lot of kids who can't afford an expensive media player. If advertised well I could see a lot of folk investing in one for xmas.

There are two of these GBA movie players available, the best one was released by AM3, and has been available from Lik-Sang.com for about a year or so. It uses compact flash cards to store media and is supposed to be very good for the price (about 20 quid or so). Buy a 256mb card and you are sorted. I find it very interesting that Nintendo are now working with these, and aren't taking anyone to court. Definitely a change for the better.

I wonder if Nintendo would also sell us their cool compact flash GBA mp3 player in EU/U.K too? Think they sell these at GBAX.com.

$20 for 40 minutes of TV? Nobody's gonna pay that.

CORRECTION: The player I was was talking about uses smart media cards, not compact flash.

I'm not sure what Nintendo have in mind for the content aspect apart from Pokemon. I wouldn't spend money on cards with Pokemon on them, when Pokemon is such a huge series. I'd have to have a blank card that I can put what I want on to it, not be dictated what I should play on it.

One of these would be good for mp3 and videos I have.
