GBA Evolves, Nintendo Admits to Developing Another New Handheld
David Gosen, head of Nintendo Europe, has admitted at the recent ELSPA conference that the next Game Boy console is already in development. Yesterday, Famitsu published a report suggesting that the DS would make a bigger impact on the industry than the PSP, so news that another new, even more advanced Nintendo handheld is around the corner will cause Sony some concern. Indeed, this may even prompt Sony to start leaking details about a possible PSP2.

A new GBA was an inevitability, with many observers speculating that it would be called GBA Evolution (which corresponds to a recently trademarked acronym) and we can now confirm that the console does feature in Nintendo’s immediate plans. If the DS was conceived in part to take the wind out of the PSP’s sails, then the GBA2 is doubtlessly designed to crush it. Nintendo rules the handheld roost at the moment, and the company is evidently poised to fend off anyone encroaching on its territory.

As soon as there are any more details regarding the GBA2, GBA Evolution or whatever it may be called, expect to read them here first.

Give me a break Nintendo! The new GameBoy every year or two I could almost handle, but not when your handhelds skyrocket to $200 a pop. If the GameBoy Evolution will have better specs than the DS, then why annouce it now? To me, a guy who just overdrew his bank account with an XBox game, annoucements like these really hurt my confidence as a buyer.

Argh matey.

This ain't really news, since Nintendo said the same thing months back. They clearly said that DS was not GBA2. I think many people have forgotten this too quickly.

I'd buy GBA2 too. Yes there are a lot of systems on the way but I still want em all, and so I shall have them all.

Nintendo will get the most out of GBASP for the moment, then cut the price of it, to make way for DS. Then perhaps GBASP will become a budget hand held, maybe around the price of a PSone, not bad with the amount of games available for it.

Maybe it is a move to push Sony out of the hand held market, if it is it's a bloody good one. I'm imagining a console with GC style graphics but I bet we won't see it for ages, maybe not til 2006 for sale. DS will need some time to suck up sales, so I don't see Nintendo releasing it until about a year or so after DS. Til then DS will offer something a little different than PSP, and keep Nintendo in the game. I could just aswell be wrong though.

Should be interesting to see how Sony tackle this super problem.

wow that must suck to have pay more then you have in a bank account for a video game, but for most us thats not a problem maybe in some cases it's all the little kids that have money form there parents or it could be like in my situation the person that works 5 days a week to have enough money to buy a video game every once in a while. but this post was never about games it was about the new nintendo game boy, it's not new news, it won't cost $200, I've never bough a game boy for $200 and if I do it will be because of inflation. oh yeah suck it sony, you will never have the same power in the handheld industry. good night to the psp, let it rot.

sony you wasted your time. you may be above the big N in the console race, but you are too conceited. you will never put the N down again, they will reclaim their console spot, and will ALWAYS DOMINATE the handheld market.

DS will make PSP obsolete
GBAE will kill it

In reply to my earlier post on this topic, reading this next bit prove I'm kind turning into some kind of person who can see into the future. (My big head is swelling now at being right this time round)

Please read this from magicbox.com found shortly before this post, then go back and read my previous post on this topic.

- David Gosen of Nintendo confirmed that the company is already developing a successor of GameBoy Advance, and it is a different system from Nintendo DS. The launch time of the system will base on how well the Nintendo DS will do in the market. If Sony PSP gains more market share, Nintendo will launch the successor of GameBoy Advance as early as 2006, otherwise the launch time will push back for another year (which is 2007).

Very weird indeed I'm sure you'll agree.

Just for everyone's information, it's Game Boy Evolution not Game Boy Advance Evolution. But I doubt it'll keep the name; Revolution and Evolution are just too similar!

Alternative headline for this story:

"Terrified Nintendo try to deflate PSP"

None of us know who's going to win the first real round in the handheld wars - my money's on Sony winning (if only on image) with Nintendo having left only the illiterate idiot fanboys who've posted in this thread.

However good the GBA successor is, that's four new Nintendo handhelds in recent years and the reason that the original Gameboy did so well is because it became so reliable and thus well established.

Nintendo is getting desperate and it knows it.

"Illiterate idiot fanboys" or not, they've kept Nintendo 6 BILLION dollars rich for 20+ years. All that's required purchase items nowadays is cash, not an IQ test.

Furthermore, for a company that is up against a handheld that noone has played, knows the pricepoint for, and is coming out a good six months AFTER the DS while owning a franchise on their handheld that outsells Final Fantasy EASILY in every single market (including America and Japan), I'd have to say Sony is the desperate one here.

Sony have no market share to lose in the handheld market and they've kicked Nintendo from the top spot before.

If PSP fails, and it won't, then Sony can write it off as an executive toy or say it was competing in a different market. PSP will eat up some of Nintendo's market share whatever happens and bearing in mind that the big N haven't had a home console smash for a while, they need to stay successful in handhelds.

Nintendo announcing two new handhelds in recent months? You think that's like them, do you?

And to finish, the fanboys aren't a core market - they won't be able to keep Nintendo afloat on their own.

Apologies in advance to the Ninty Fanboys for saying this, but when I see the DS, all I think of is 'Virtual Boy'.

If Big N decides to launch yet another handheld shortly after the DS, what's that saying about its anticipated lifespan?

If I had money to buy every gaming gadget released, then I would. I love my SP - but I'll skip the DS and wait to see what the GBA2 has to offer.

Rub the screen. Chuckle.
