Screenshots of what purports to be a Xbox Next development kit, called Xenon, have leaked from an anonymous source at Xbox-scene.com. Allegedly, this screen would be used to launch and configure games. Although some sites are insisting that this is totally authentic, it could equally be be some kind of elaborate ruse. The Xbox-scene community is no stranger to eccentric console modifiers who boast applications so profoundly customised that they’re barely identifiable, and this could possibly be one of those.
In the early hours of this morning, freeware software for Xbox skinning was released by a member of the modding community. This is software that would make it straightforward for someone to mock up or emulate a ‘dev kit screenshot’. The spare hard-drive space information on the screenshot therefore doesn't necessarily indicate the size of Xbox Next’s hard drive, nor are the names Xenon and Dolphin gospel. This shot resembles a custom screen for someone who’s installed a 120 GB hard drive into their standard, current-gen Xbox. Perhaps that's what it is?
There have been no official confirmations from Microsoft, but it seems possible that this ‘leak’ could be nothing more than a big fat lie. Perhaps the folks at Xbox-Scene did get their hands on the genuine article and just so happened to release software with the power to create such screens at exactly the same time, but it seems far a bit too coincidental to be entirely convincing.
Stay tuned for all the facts about Xbox Next as soon as they become available.
